市場というのは、都市の台所とかいわれる。食品を蓄えたり料理を作るという意味で市場は都市の 台所であり、都市の人々を食べさせてくれるとう意味では都市の食堂なのかもしれない。都市を知るためにはまず市場に行く。市場をみれば、その町の人々がど のよう暮らしをしているか、食糧が充足しているか、飢えているかは一目でわかる。
　市場を行き交う人々は、だいたいにおいて幸せそうである。買い物をする人々は、なにがしかのお金を手にして市場を歩き周り、安い店をさがしたり、さらに値切ったりして、一日分の糧を買うことに成功 したのであれば、無理からぬことだろう。もちろん、売る側においても、畑でとれた産物を持ち込んで、店頭に並べては売りさばいたとすれば、それなりの達成 感があるだろう。だから市場は幸せなのだ。
　カンボジアの首都、プノンペンの滞在もすこし長くなってきたころ、常宿を変えた。それを機に、それまであまり行かなかったオールド・マーケットやカン ダール・マーケットに歩いて行くようになった。青果の多いマーケットには季節の野菜が色とりどりに、果物が香り豊かに並んでいた。

    Markets are often called the kitchen of a city.  A market is where the food is store and served, so it is like a dining and kitchen combined.  If you want to know about a city, you may first go to a market.  Looking at the market, you could easily imagine how the people make living - whether the food is plenty or scarce. 
    People in the market are mostly happy people.  The shoppers might have walked in the market with money in the wallet, looked for better bargains, negotiated prices and might have consequently secured some foodstuff for the day's consumption after all.  Why shouldn't they be unhappy?  The vendors have brought in whatever foodstuff their farm produces, nd managed to sell most of it for some price, which is the days achievement for them. 
    When my stay in Phnom Penh, Cambodia was becoming long, I changed my hotel. The new hotel was close to a vegetable market and I started to visit it sometimes.  The market is full of colors and fragrance of vegetables and fruits in the season.
