バンコクに長期滞在すると、休日の散歩が楽しみになった。バンコクにはイギリス統治を思わせる古い意町があったり、逆に出来たてのピカピカの 新しいショッピング街があったりもする。早朝に起きてバスに飛び乗り、好き勝手に歩き回ることが休日の日課になった。
　そのなかでも私のお気に入りがパークロン市場の周辺だ。パークとは口のこと、クローンは運河だから、運河の河口という意味の地区だ。名前の通り、市内を 縦貫する運河がチャオプラヤ川に合流する近辺にある。また市内を走るバス路線の終点が設定されていることが多いから、交通の便も悪くない。
　私はひそかにこの場所を「百円の楽園」と呼んでいる。市バスの料金は6から7バーツくらいだから14バーツで往復できる。散歩の必携、ミネラル・ウォー ターが やはり7バーツくらい。ちょっとしたお菓子や果物は１０バーツくらいだから、2回買い食いしても２０バーツ、合計で40バーツくらいで半日遊べる。40 バーツ とは大体1ドル、日本円で100円くらいだ。
　バンコクのマーケットには取り扱い商品に特徴があることが多いのだが、このパークロン市場は青果と切花が得意分野だ。早朝は船で荷物を運び込む人たち の荷揚げで始まり、お昼くらいまでにぎわう。日中は暑いから買い物客の足は遠のくが、夕方にはまた買い物客がもどってくる。切花はさまざまなお祝いの贈答 に使われる。栄転やら新任、もちろん結婚や出産など、さまざまな祝儀に花束やバスケットが贈られる。花のある生活というのは文化的、と思う。
　

   During my long stay in Bangkok, I often took a walk in the city in weekends.  Bangkok has various faces; ranging from an old town with leftovers from the British days to a brand new shopping center.  My walks normally started by taking an early morning bus to the city center.
    One of my favorite places in Bangkok is a place called Paak Klong Market, which is located at the mouth (paak) of a canal (klong) at the Chaopraya river.  This is a convenient location for the walk, as not a few bus routes in Bangkok terminate there. 
    I secretly called this place a one-dollar paradise.  A bus ride costs Baht 6 or 7, and thus a round trip costs about Baht 14 or so.  A bottle of mineral water is about Baht 7, and you could grab some snacks such as cakes or cut fruits for Baht 10 per munch.  So with about Baht 40, equivalent to US$1, you could make a half day trip to paradise.
    Markets in Bangkok have specialty, and this market deal in vegetables and flowers.  In early morning, you could see boats carrying vegetables and flowers coming down the Chaopraya river,  and the unloaded goods spread in the market soon.  People come for shopping until about noon.  As the market subsides with the heat of the day, evening breeze bring the people back on the street.  Flowers are plenty here, as they are needed for various festive occasions such as promotion and transfer, wedding or birth of a baby etc.  Life with flowers is civilized, I think.
