ユーラシア写真館６３－戦場に架ける橋・クワイ川鉄橋の今―カンチャナブリ（タイ）

　　「クワイ川マーチ」という曲をご存知だろうか。思わず口笛を吹きたくなる、軽快で覚えやすいメロディーの名曲、映画「戦場に架ける橋」のテーマソングです。この戦場に架ける橋というのはクワイ川鉄橋のことで、今もタイ国鉄の線路の一部として使われていると聞きました。場所はタイの首都バンコクから電車や高速バスで3時間あまり西の方に行った、カンチャナブリという町の近くだそうだ。折から「クワイ川鉄橋祭り」が開催中らしい。年に一度、 11月末から12月始め、12月6日の国王誕生日にハイライトを迎えるのだそうだ。
　しかし、クワイ川鉄橋の歴史を調べるにしたがって、お祭り気分は吹っ飛んでしまいました。この鉄橋は、太平洋戦争中に日本軍が占領したビルマ（現在のミャンマー）への補給路とした「泰緬鉄道」の一部なのだそうだ。当時、日本軍は海の覇権を失いつつあり、ビルマへの海上補給が危ぶまれていました。そこでタイから国境近くの山間をぬって鉄道を敷設し、ミャンマーに補給物資を届けるというのがこの鉄道の目的でした。連合軍の捕虜や地元の労働者が多数動員され、過酷な条件のもとで昼夜を分かたない突貫作業が行われ、伝染病の蔓延やマラリアなどもあり、多数の犠牲者がでたそうです。
　クワイ川鉄橋は、その泰緬鉄道がただ一度だけメクロン川（現在は鉄橋の名前にちなみクワイ・ヤイ川と改名されています）を渡る箇所に架けられています。橋脚と橋脚のあいだを小さい曲線の鉄製のアーチを連ねてくみ上げることによって橋を支える、トラス橋と呼ばれる構造の橋です。真ん中の3つ分のスパンが太平洋戦争末期の連合軍の空爆で陥落して、その場所だけ四角いトラス2スパンで再建されています。真ん中の部分だけ形が違い、また橋脚の間隔が広いのはそのためです。映画ではクワイ川鉄橋は木で組み上げた不思議な形の橋が出てきますが、これは別の場所で撮影用に作られたものです。
　膨大な犠牲が払われたことは痛ましいことです。カンチャナブリには連合軍の犠牲者を埋葬した共同墓地があります。またオーストラリア政府は、多くのオーストラリア人の犠牲者がでた、通称ヘルファイアー（地獄の火、夜中に捕虜を働かせるために炊かれた灯明）を記録して知ってもらうために当時の鉄道敷を保存して公開しています。
　その泰緬鉄道は、ミャンマーの区間は戦後にイギリスによって撤去されましたが、タイ側はカンチャナブリを通って山に入るまで区間がタイ国鉄によって運行されています。不幸な生い立ちの鉄道ですが、現在はバンコクからカンチャナブリを繋ぎ、映画の舞台・クワイ川鉄橋を渡り、さらに終点のナムトック駅（有名なエラワンの滝があります）まで、週末になると多くの外国人やタイ人の観光客を運ぶ人気路線です。

    Do you know the Kwai River March, a cheerful and easy-to-remember melody. This is the song feature in the mover, the Bridge on the River Kwai. This bridge is used even today as part of the Nam Tok line operated by the Thai State Railway. It is located in a city called Kanchanaburi, locate some 3 hours to the west of Bangkok by train or express bus. I hear that the annual event to commemorate the bridge was now on. The event is held every year from the middle of November through the beginning of December, until the King's Birthday on 6th December.
    As I leaned about the history of the bridge, my mood changed. This bridge was build by the Japanese army during the World War II as part of the Thailand - Burma railway, which was to provide a supply route to Burma, which had been under its control. Then the Japanese army was losing control of the Indian Ocean, and the supply to Burma was being endangered. To construct this railway, hundreds of thousands of Asian workers and the WOPs of the Allied Forces were enforced to work on the construction sites. Under the severe working environment and through-the-day hard work together with epidemic disease, hundreds of thousands of people died.
    This bridge is a truss bridge with arch-shaped iron sustaining the structures between the piers. Three of the central spans were destroyed by bombardment at the end of WWII, but rebuilt with rectangular truss structures after the war. This is why the bridge looks differently in the center of the bridge, and the interval of pier are longer. The movie was shot in Sri Lanka, they say, at a bridge build for the movie.
    I personally feel it distressing that a large number of casualty was incurred by the construction of this railway. There is a cemetery near the Kanchanaburi station. The Australian Government operates a museum to commemorate the human cost of their national in the Hell Fire Pass.
    A part of the Thailand - Burma railway is now operated by the Thai State Railway passing Kanchanaburi, up to the monitions. This heart wrenching railway now connects part of Bangkok and Kanchanaburi, crosses the famous bridge on the River Kwai, and reaches the Nam Tok (waterfall) station, and provides a popular weekend resort express.
