バンコクの繁華街といえば、一昔前ならシーロム通り、と答える人が多かったかもしれないが、今はまず間違いなくスクンヴィット通りという人が 多いだろう。シーロム方面は銀行の本店などがあって、東京でいえば銀座・大手町の風情だが、スクンヴィットは新しい町だから新宿か青山のような感じだ。こ のバンコク一の繁華街、スクンヴィット通りを端から端まで歩いて見た。
　最初はサイアーム駅。タイの昔の呼び名シャムという言葉は今でも使われるが、読み方はサイアームだ。駅の南側はサイアーム・スクエアという一角で、タイ の名門チュラロンコン大学に隣接することもあって、おしゃれで新しモノ好きの町だ。秋葉原のオタク文化を取り入れて、いち早くメイド･カフェが開店したと いうニュースも流れた。
　途中、ソイ３の辺りはアラブ人街として有名だ。この通り添いだけは、タイ語にまじってアラビア語が幅をきかせ、カフェの店頭には水タバコのパイプが並 び、カバブの香ばしい匂いが漂う。
　プロンポンから西側は日本人の居住者の多い地区だ。日本食レストランからスーパーや古本屋、貸しビデオ屋さんまで、日本人グッズがそろう。プロンポン駅 前のエンポーリアムは在住の人なら知らぬ人はいない高級デパートだ。
　スクンヴィット通りには、高架 鉄道・スカイトレインがまっすぐに貫いて走っているから、どこへいくのも渋滞知らずで便利だ。繁華 街とはいえ、高級デパートやホテルのわきに屋台店がでていたりするところがタイらしい。

    Asked about a commercial area of Bangkok, people may have said the Silom-Sathorn area before, but now more people would answer Sukumvit.  While Silom still accommodates the major banks and corporate headquarters, Sukumvit is more popular for shopping and amusement.
    The starting point is Siam Station.  This is the terminal station of the elevated train, popularly known as Sky Train.  The area south of the station is called Siam Square - which is the place new things start.  A "maid cafe" was recently opened following the anorak culture of Tokyo. 
    Soi 3 is famous for as the Arab Street here.  Signboards have Arabic letters, cafes have water pipes and the kebab smell cooks from a restaurant. 
    The areas west of Phrom Pong is popular for Japanese residents here.  There are Japanese restaurants, supermarkets and even a video rental and used bookstore, too.  The Emporium is the famous department store in front of the Phrom Pong Station.
    Sukumvit Street is served by the elvated train all the way through.  The commercial avenue have foodstalls right in between big hotels and office buildings - which is felt to be very typically "Thai" and I love it.
