埼玉県西部、秩父。東京から西武鉄道で約1時間半の距離にある。歴史的には武蔵と甲州をつなぐ「秩父往還」という街道が通り、関所が設けられた場所でもある。江戸時代には観音信仰と結びついた札所巡りが流行した。秩父地方の美しい農村・山村風景のなかに散りばめられた34箇所の観音堂を回る、いわばお遍路回りである。今でもお遍路巡りを楽しむ人々の姿を見かける。
　秩父は、秩父市を中心に５町４村が集まる秩父盆地の総称でもある。そのため、秩父には山あり、川あり、平野あり、と変化に富んだ地形が見られる。秩父盆地を貫いて流れるのは、荒川である。荒川は奥秩父の山並みに発し、最後は東京湾に流れ込む。源流の奥秩父の山々は、春は新緑、秋は紅葉が美しい。
　私にとって秩父は特別な場所である。なぜなら秩父は私の生まれ故郷だから。機会あるごとに秩父に足を運んだ。首都圏からわずかに２時間ほどの秩父は、古くからの人間の営みが作り出した幽玄な霊気を感じさせる。

   Chichibu is located in western part of Saitama Prefecture, in the metropolitan area of Japan.  It is about one hour and a half away from Tokyo by Seibu Line.  Historically, this is where a regional trail passed, and a checking station was established.  In Edo Period, there was a boom of pilgrimage to worship Kannon temples around Japan.  In Chichibu, a route of pilgrimage encompassing 33 (later 34) temples became popular.  Even nowadays, there are people walking along this route of pilgrimage.
    Chichibu is a composite of Chichibu City, 5 towns and 4 villages, all in Chichibu Basin.  Thus this place has various topography including mountains, plains and rivers.  The river that forms this basin is Arakawa River that originates in the mountains of Chichibu and flushes to Tokyo Bay.  The mountains in the headwaters of Arakawa are covered with beautiful forests - which show tender green in spring and colorful autumn leaves in fall.
    Chichibu is a special place for me - as this is the place I was born.  On a few occasions I set out for Chichibu.  Apart from a couple of hours from the hustling streets of Tokyo, Chichibu is laden with divine air scented with historical human activities for ages.
