ぼくは中国にはあまり縁がなく、これまで1度しか行ったことがなかった。それも1991年のことだから、もう17年も経つことになる。最近の中国の経済 発展は目覚しいから、中国も大きく変わりつつあるのかもしれない。人口13億人の中国人が車を買えるくらいの経済レベルになると、世界の経済地図が大きく 変わることになる。それが、今年になってちょっとした仕事が始まり、その関係で1週間だけだが中国にいけることになった。中国といっても首都北京ではな く、渤海湾に面した都市・大連だ。
　大連という町は19世紀末、清朝時代にやっと町ができ、その後帝政ロシアがシベリア鉄道の迂回路として東清鉄道の建設をはじめ、その支線として大連から 旅順へ伸びる鉄道を敷いたことから発展する。その駅名が「遥か遠い」という意味のダールニィ（Дальний）だったことから、それが転じて大連という名 前となったという。その遠い町･大連が、今は近い町である。日本から見ての話だ。成田から飛行機で2時間ほどで大連に直行できる。
    「大連料理」という呼び方もあるようだが、大連は海辺の町だから海鮮料理が美味しい。肉と野菜を炒める伝統的な中華料理と少しことなり、海鮮を油を少なく さっと調理するのが大連料理の醍醐味のようだ。生食も「あり」だ。遠くて近い町、大連を駆け足で回ってきました。またゆっくりと生きたいな。

    THough I have not been so luck as to visit People's Republic of China often, I visited there only once. about 17 years ago.  As the recent economic growth is so prominent that the things are in the process of changing perhaps.  If every one of the 1.3 billion PRC population started to buy an automobile, the economic map of the world will have to be changed quite significantly.  But this year brought me a small job there, and I had a chance to visit there.  Not Beijin, but a seaside city of Dalian, if you know it.
    The history of Dalian do not go beyond much earlier than 19th century, when the Russian Empire laid out a railway called China Eastern Railway as a substitute for the Siberian Railway line, and built a branch line towards the sea.  The Russian named the station here "Dalney" meaning "far away" in their language, which later became Dalian.  But this city is so close from Japan -- only 2 hours flight from Narita. 
    Dalian has a peculiar food, which is sometimes called Dalian cuisine.  The traditional Chinese dishes are basically fried meat and vegetables, but the food in Dalian  use more seafood, and the way of cooking uses much less oil.  Sometimes the seafood is eaten raw, which is very rare in the Chinese cooking.  I loved the food there.  Next time I may spend more time there.
