バンコクの鉄道始発駅といえば、中央駅にあたるホアランポン駅と、南や西に向かう川向こうのトンブリ駅がある。ところが、もうひとつ、タイ国 鉄の本線とつながっていない郊外電車、通称マハチャイ線の始発駅ワンウェンヤイ駅というのが川向こうのトンブリ地区の一角にある。バンコクに駐在している 人でも、よっぽどの事情通かテッチャンでもなければ知らない駅だ。マハチャイは現在ではサムート・サコン市と呼ばれているが、ここでマハチャイ川が鉄道の いくてを阻む。鉄道橋はないから、客はフェリーで対岸に渡ることになる。すると対岸にはもうひとつ駅があり、そこからさらに西のサムート・ソンクラム（展 示室93でとりあげました）まで鉄道がつながっているのだそうだ。つまりフェリーで2本の単線鉄道がつながっているわけだ。
　ぼくは昔バンコクに長期滞在していたころに思い立って、この鉄道でマハチャイ駅までいったことがある。マハチャイは河口の町だけあって、シーフードが名 物だ。川風に吹かれて茹でえびなどをつまみながらビールを飲むというのは、最高な休日の過ごし方だ。バンコク市内からはタクシーで「サタニ（駅）ワンウェ ンヤイ」といえばたいてい行ってくれる。午前中は1時間に一本くらい列車があり、マハチャイまで1時間ほどだ。夕方までゆっくりして、帰りは夕刻の鉄道 か、あるいはバスで帰って来る手もある。
　先月（2008年3月）にバンコクで半日ほど時間があいたので、ワンウェンヤイ駅の周辺を歩いた。この駅は駅の中にたくさんの店がある。というより、商 店街の中に線路を敷いたというような感じだ。最近日本では、上野駅の改修工事が有名だけれど、駅構内にお店を作って、駅でお買い物して食事してなんていっ ているが、タイでは昔からそうなのだ。
　こんど時間があったら、マハチャイでフェリーをわたり、サムートソンクラムまで単線鉄道＆フェリー乗り継ぎの旅ってのもいいな。

　The railway terminals in Bangkok include the Hoa Lampung Station, which is like the central station, and Thonburi Station on the other side of the river.  But, there is yet one more - Wan Wen Yai Station in Thonburi where a local railway called Mahachai Line starts.  Mahachai is another name for the Samut Sakhon city, where a big river called the Mahachai gets in the way.  Getting on board a ferry, the passengers could take a connecting line on the other side of the river to Samu Somkram (Photo Gallery 93).  Thus, two railway lines are connected by a ferry service on the Mahachi river.
    I got on this line once when I was staying in Bangkok and visited March, which is famous for the sea food. Picking on the boiled shrimps while sipping bear at local restaurant facing the river is a five star leisure for a holiday. Take a taxi in Bangkok and ask for "Satani (station) Wan Wen Yai", and take the train there.  There are services once every hour or so in the early hours in the morning.  Getting back, you may take a bus which is generally quicker and more often.
    I had a half day free in Bangkok in March 2008, so I visited the Wan Wen Yai station area.  This station is interesting - there are so many shops in the station.  It is more like a market with a rail in the center.  Next time I hope to take the ferry and take the connecting line to Samut Somkram.
