　アンコール遺跡はカンボジアの誇りといっていいだろう。東南アジアには世界遺産に指定された文 化遺産は少なくないが、アンコール遺跡は、独特な建築様式や美しいフォルム、圧倒的な規模や緻密さなど、いずれをとっても真に人類の至宝に違いない。ア ンコール遺跡と冒頭に書いたが、実はアンコール遺跡というのは数十の遺跡群の総称である。その代表格がアンコールワットである。
　アンコールワットはスルヤヴァルマン2世によって12世紀前半に建造された、ピラミッド型の構造をもつ遺跡である。台形をした３つの層が積み重ねられて いる。最上層には、四隅と中央に搭があり、これがアンコールワットのシルエットを作っている。
　膨大な量の石材とラテライト・ブロックを積み上げ、上へ上へと伸びていくアンコールワットは、何か巨大な力を感じさせる。壁面に施された浮き彫りも緻密 で、その量も半端ではない。
　アンコールワットを訪れると世界観が変わる、という人もいる。これだけの建造物を作ったア ンコール王朝の力は巨大だったことが体感される。世界遺産に値する、素晴らしい文化財だ。

    The Angkor Ruins are the pride of Cambodia.  There are a dozen of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Southeast Asia, but the Angkor Ruins are special, in the unique architectural form, gigantic scale and very fine carvings.  The Angkor Ruins are a collection of a dozen of separate sites, and the representative one is the Angkor Wat.
    The Angkor Wat was built by the king Suryavarman II in the first half of the 12th Century.  The basic form is a pyramid type with three rectangle bases overlain one on the other.  On the highest base, there are four towers on the corners and the one in the center.  These five towers makes the silhouette of Angkor Wat seen from afar.
    The huge volume of stone and laterite blocks being piled up to reach the sky shows the power and strength of the builder, and the carvings on the walls are delicate and endless.  Seeing the Angkor Wat may change your life, some say.  The Angkor Wat is truly magnificent and is worth a visit.
