タイ北部のチェンマイ。13世紀後半から500年間にわたり、北タイを制したランナー王国の王都であった古都である。古都・チェンマイについ ては別の機会にアップしようと思っているが、今回は チェンマイから西に１５ｋｍほどの場所にあるドーイ・ステープ山を取り上げることにしよう。14世紀後半に開山された、チェンマイの守護神ともいうべき聖 山だ。山頂に は純金に塗られた、大きな仏塔があり、人々は無心に祈りをささげる。仏塔の奥にはチェンマイ市内が眼下に一望される展望台があり、老若男女、デジカメやら 携 帯電話をもって記念撮影に励むすがたが見られる。タイは国としてはタイ族が多数を占めるが、この一帯は少数民族（山岳民族とも呼ばれる）が多く暮らす地域 でもある。 ドイステープ山から山肌にウネウネと張り付いた道を行くこと小一時間、モン族が暮らす村にいたる。山間地にへばりつくように広がる村落は、私のふるさとで ある懐かしい山里の風景を思 い出した。

   Chiang Mai is the ancient city north of Thailand, which was the capital of Lunna Kingdom for about 500 years since the end of 13th Century.  I will take up Chiang Mai in anther occasion, but today's intallement is a holy mountain called Doi Suthep, about 15 km west of Chiang Mai.  This mountain has seated the gurdian temple of Chiang Mai since the latter part of 14th Century.  On the top is a golden-colored stupa where the people offer solemn preyers.  In the back of the stupa is a look out with a panoramic view of Chiang Mai down below.  In this vicinity towards the Burmese border is inhabited by minority tribes, often called the hill-tribes.  An hour's car ride brought us to a small Mong village in the hills, where they live in a secluded community.  The view of the village is very much the same as that of my home country in Japan, also in the  mountains.
