トンレ・サップ湖は、カンボジアの北西部にある東南アジア最大の淡水湖である。クメール語で Tonle(川）とSap(湖）を組み合わせたものがだ、この湖の不可思議な特性を良く表しているかもしれない。というのもトンレサップ湖はメコン川の支 流で結ばれており、雨期と乾季で１０メートルほども上下するメコン川の水位に連動して伸縮するという、世界でも類をみない湖なのだ。雨期にメコン川の水位 が上がると、メコンの水は川を逆流してトンレ･サップ湖に飲み込まれていく。そして乾季になってメコンの水位が下がると、こんどはトンレ･サップの水がメ コン川を潤すことになる。メコン川の水量を調節する、巨大な調整池のような役割を果たしている、ということになる。私が勝手に新しく世界遺産を指定できる とすれば、間違いなくトンレ･サップを選ぶ。こんなにユニークな自然の湖は、世界中みても他にない。
このトンレ・サップ湖には都合三度ほど、足を運んだ。シムリアップから車で30分ほど走ると、プノン・クロンという小高い丘が見えてくる。丘の入り口近 くで湖上観光の舟を手配して、丘の先にある船着場から舟に乗る。船着場はトンレ･サップの水際に置かれるから、水位によって場所が変わる。決まった場所に ある町ではないので、水道もなければ電気も来ていない。10人乗りほどのエンジンの付いたボートは３０分ほど、湖上に住む人々の住宅や商店、学校などの水上ハウス群を走りぬける。水没林を越えると、広々とした外洋に でる。雨期には琵琶湖の20倍の大きさになるという、トンレ・サップの巨大な水塊のただ中にいる。
本当は朝焼や夕暮れのトンレ･サップに舟を出したかった。あるいは湖の北東にある鳥類保護区にも行ってみたかった。まあ旅に未練はつき物だ。
Tonle Sap Lake is one of the largest fresh water lake in Southeast Asia. The name comes from the Khmer language, Tonle (river) and Sap (lake). Yes, as the name goes, it is a riverine lake. Tonle Sap is connected with the Mekong river with its tributary, and thus expands and shrinks its water area as the water level of the Mekong changes. The lake swallows the increasing water of the Mekong during the rainy season like a hungry stomach, and discharges the water in the dry season as the water reduces. A lake such as this is so unique and rare in the world, that if I could choose a new World Heritage registration, I would undoubtedly go for Tonle Sap.
I visited Tonle Sap in three occasions. Driving from Siem Reap southwards for about half an hour, you find a small hill called Phnom Krom, which is one of the three holy mountains of the Angkor kingdom. You could arrange to charter a boat in a shack at the foot of the hill. From here, you drive further to a quay to take the boat, but the location of the quay changes as the water level of Tonle Sap fluctuates. The quay is located in a community called Chong Knea. There is no power nor water supply in this village, as the village is seasonally goes under water. The chartered boat first cruise for half an hour through a channel between boat houses where people live, study, shop and worship. At the end of the channel is what is called a submerged forest with trees sticking out from water, and after this is a wide and tremendous water body with no limit. You are in the middle of huge water body of Tonle Sap.
I was hoping to go on Tonle Sap during the morning dusk or in the evening, and visit the bird sanctuary in vein. Regrets are good as they build up energy for the next occasion.
