谷中という町は東京・日暮里にある。江戸城の北東の方角には、鬼門（物の怪が来る方角）を平定するために上野・寛永寺が置かれた。その近隣に ある谷中には、寛永寺の創建以降、次々と寺院が開かれ、寺の門前に茶屋や食べ物屋がでるようになり、寺町として栄えたのだそうだ。一般に東京の下町といえ ば川沿いの低地をいうことがおおい。谷中は地理的には低地とはいえないが、雰囲気としてはまさしく東京の下町の風情だ。
　谷中には文学者や芸術家にまつわる旧跡が多く、谷中の動坂出身の森まゆみさんの「谷中スケッチブック―心やさしい都市空間」で紹介され、さらには森さん が編集人として創刊した地域雑誌『谷中・根津・千駄木』で多くの人の知るところとなった。いまや休日には谷根千（やねせん、とこの雑誌は通称される）の バックナンバーを片手に町歩きをする人やグループで賑わい、外国人の訪問者も少なくない谷中は今や、東京の古き寺町の代名詞になったといっても過言でな いのかもしれない。
　私が谷中に興味をもったのは、森さんの「谷中スケッチブック」だった。この本は、谷中の旧跡や寺をあたかも作家とともに歩きながら解説してもらっている ような気がする。ただ、行ったことがないとサッパリ実感が湧かない。そこで昼休みや休日に谷中を歩くようになった。いまから4年ほどまえのことだ。
　谷中銀座という商店街の入り口近くに、初音そばという小さい蕎麦屋さんがある。お昼前に会社を抜け出して昼休みが終わる頃には何食わぬ顔をして会社に戻 らないといけないから、私は蕎麦屋に飛び込んで慌しく注文をしようとした。するとご主人は、「ああ、今日は良いお湿りがありましたねぇ」と一言。そういえ ばお店で天気の話をしたなどほとんど記憶がなかった。この町には古の時間が流れている、そう思った。
　
　Yanaka is located near Nippori Station in Tokyo.  Tokyo was called Edo about 400 years ago, when the Edo Castle was opened threre.  Located in the northeast direction of Edo, which was called the demon's gate where the spooky demons were belived to enter, the Kaneiji Temple was built in Ueno to protect and conceal the evil direction.  This started the adjoining Yanaka area to attract smaller temples to lacate, and the town began to florish as a temple town.
    Yanaka is endowed with a number of historic sites associated with literature and art.  When a book was written about Yanaka by an author, Mayumi Mori, a native of Yanaka, which illustrated the attractive old town and hisotric sites, Yanaka and its environs became a hot spot for urban walkers.  Nowadays the name of the town is known also to foreign visitors who take interest in old town of Tokyo.
    The trigger for me to start walking in Yanaka was this book.  This book is felt like a virtual tour with the author, who would explain in person about the historical spots on the episodes of the sites.  Nonetheless, this virtual tour would not be real unless one knows about the area, so I started to take a walk on and off.  Often I escaped the office during the lunch break and strolled around Yanaka in strides.
    Near the entrance of the Yanaka Ginza, the local shopping street, there is a soba (Japanese noodle) shop.  I dropped by the shop on one mid-day hoping to have a quick lunch after the busy luch break walk, the shopkeeper stopped me placing an order in a haste, saying, "It was raining today - such a nice blessing after the dry spell".  When was the last time I hear about the weather in a shop, I thought.  This temple town has a different time scale - an older and slower one from the quick elapse of time of modern age.
