In Japan, the full moon particularly in the autumn is celebrated with great admiration, and the same is true to Laos. Today, I will introduce you to two full moon festivals as they are celebrated in the capital city, Vientiane, of Laos.
日本でも秋の満月は中秋の名月などといわれるけれど、仏教国であるラオスでも秋の満月は大切なお祭りの時だ。今日はラオスの首都・ビエンチャンで見た満 月のお祭りを2題、紹介する。
まずはロイ・カトーン。これは水面にバナナの葉などで作ったカトーン（灯篭）に蝋燭の灯を点して川などに流すものだ。タイではロイ・クラトーンと呼ば れ、11月の満月の時に行われるのが普通だが、ラオスでは10月の満月だから1ヶ月早い。ビエンチャンでは、すぐ前を流れるメコン川は流れが速いので、中 洲との間にある、あまり流れのない小さな支流で灯篭を流す。
そしてもうひとつのお祭りが、タトルアン祭りた。タトルアン（That Luang）というのは黄金に塗られた仏塔で、ビエンチャンの守り神のような存在の仏塔だ。その仏塔の周りで毎年、秋の満月に行われるのがタトルアン祭り だ。2010年は11月の中ごろに開かれた。タトルアン祭りは、ラオス中のお坊さんが集まったのではないかと思われるくらい、多数のお坊さんが橙色の袈裟 を身にまとい、訪れた人々はその夥しいお坊さんに喜捨する、というものだ。僕たちは、事務所の秘書さんを先導役に、前もって喜捨用の炊いたもち米や 2000キップ（約20円）を100枚ほど用意してもらい、タトルアン祭りに出かけた。これだけのお坊さんに喜捨したら、きっといいことがあるだろ う・・・。
The first one is called Loi Kratoon,. This festival is characterized by letting kratoon (lantern) made of banana leaves and others with candle lights on to flow down on a river. This festival is also celebrated but in November. In Laos, this festival is done on the full moon nigh in October. The Mekong river running in from of VIentiane is a little to fast in the flow, so the people let them go down in s small, slow stream off the Mekong between an isle in the channel.
The other is That Luang Festival, heldhel in the middle of November. That Luang is a very famous golden stupa of Vientiane that is like a guardian of Vientiane. This annual festival is celebrated around the golden stupa with hundreds of Buddhism priestsorange in orage color outfits, and a huge number of people making their wishes to come true. For this festival, we set out preparationwith good prepartion. Our secretary has prepared the steamed sticky rice and a bunch of 2,000 Kip (2hundred5 cent) new notdonatinges (a hundered of them) for donotefforting to the priests. With this much effeort, there must be good things to come about for sure.
