今年（2009年）は、久しぶりにカンボジアの仕事が入った。大好きなカンボジアにまた来られると思うと、嬉しい。
　ずっと行ってみたいと思っていたカンポンチュナンに、今回、始めて行った。カンポンチュナンは二つの点でユニークだ。一つはその立地が、トンレサップ湖 の首根っこのところにあることだ。トンレサップ湖は巨大な内陸湖で、漁業や舟運が盛んだから、カンポンチュナンにはいろいろな物資が集まってくることにな る。もう一つは、素焼きの土器なのだが、これは次回取り上げることにする。
　プノンペンからカンポンチュナンに行くには、シムリアップ行きの高速船で途中下車させてもらうか、あるいは長距離バスかだ。今回はバスにした。チケット を買って長距離バスに乗ってみると、エアコンは効いているし、快適だし早い。2時間半ほどで到着する。バスは国道5号線を行くから、町の中央の市場のあた りで下ろしてもらう。ここから、トンレサップ湖畔まで移動するのだが、これはもうバイク・タクシーしかない。
　トンレサップ湖の水位は、雨季にはメコン河の水位が上がるにつれて、その水を呑み込むから水位が上がる。そして乾季になるとこの水を吐き出すから水位が 下がる。つまり一年周期で水位が上がって下がるわけだ。行った時（4月）乾季の終わりごろだから、水位は低い。多くの家は長い木の杭の上に載っていて、乾 季にはその杭がニョキニョキと空中の家を支えている。雨季には家のある高さまで水位が上がることになる。

    This year (2009), I got a new project in Cambodia.  This means that I can stay in Cambodia for some time, which is very pleasing to me.
    There is a place called Kanpong Chhnang which I had wanted to visit long, and this time it came true.  This town, Kanpong Chhnang is unique in two ways.  The one is that it is located at the neck of the Great Lake, Tonle Sap.  Tonle Sap has lots of activities including the fishery and maritime transportation, Kampong Chhnang flourishes with many a boats with plenty of goods.  The other is the production of potteries, which I will talk in the next installment.
    To go to Kampong Chhnang from Phnom Penh, you may take the fast boat to Siem Reap (and ask to be dropped there), or take a long distance bus service.  The bus is quick and conformable.  It takes only about 2 hours and a half.  When you get off in the city center, move to the river bank by using, say, Motorcycle taxi, which is the most popular transport means here.
    The water level of Tonle Sap increase with that of the Mekong during the Wet Season, and then decrease with the Mekong during the dry season.  Thus the water levels of the Tonle Sap has a yearly change.  Most of the houses along the river is put on wooden spikes, and the sill level of the houses are the normal water level of the river during the rainy season.  I went there in April, which is about the end of wet season, so many of the wooden spikes were exposed.
