福井県三国。どこそれ、といわれてしまいそうだけれど、昔から北前船の寄港地として栄えた港町だ。九頭龍川の河口にある。ここを訪れたのは、 明治期にデレイケなどとともに明治政府が治水の先進国オランダから招いた土木技術者エッセルが、三国にエッセル堤と呼ばれる突堤を築いたからだ。つまり、 明治期の西洋技術を日本に移植しようとした頃の土木遺産というわけだ。
　このエッセルという人は小学校も設計しているが、それが八角形をした個性的な建物で、龍翔小学校として開校された。残念ながらその建物は後に取り壊され てしまうのだが、1981年に再建された。その頃だったと思うが、設計者のG.A.エッセルが日本でも有名な騙し絵（トリックアート）の大家M.C.エッ シャーのお父さんであることが解ったのだ。それを機に、三国では「トリックアート･コンペ」が開催されたりしたようだ。
　三国は往時の繁栄を偲ばせるように、見事な洋館や木造建築があり、町歩きが楽しい個性的な町だった。

    Mikuni, where? Well it is not a major town in Japan.  But this small port town at the mouth of the Kuzuryu River flourished as a gateway on the northern cargo route in Edo Period onwards.  In the Meiji Era, the port located at the mouth of the River suffered from sedimentation from the river, and Dutch engineer was called to address this problem  His name was G. A. Escher, and he built a jetty along the river towards the ocean so that the river flow  would be kept at a high speed and sediment would not fall into the bed.  This jetty is one of the engineering heritage in Japan in the early years of the modernization.
    The same person, Engineer Escher designed the building to be used as a primary school there in Mikuni.  It's a pity that the building was later destroyed, the building was rebuilt based on the original design in 1981.  It was about this time that some newspaper in Japan reported that this G.A. Escher is the father of M. C. Escher, the master ofr trick art.  Mikuni Town carried out trick art competition to celebrate this finding.
    Mikuni has many a good old buildings and mansions, and is a attractive site for city walk.
