エジプトの首都カイロに長期滞在していたころ、週末になるとどこに行こうかと思案していた。たいていは金曜日が一日だけ休日ということが多 かったので、日帰りでいける場所を探すことになる。アレクサンドリアやスエズ、ポートサイード、ファユームあたりが行きやすいが、これらの場所を一通り 回ってしまった。すると次が難しい。ガイドブックの隅っこを読んでいたときに発見したのが、今日のテーマ、サーン・エル・ハガルとアブ・ミーナーだ。二つ の町に共通するのは、砂漠の真っ只中にあることと、カイロから直行のバスがないことだ。
　サーン・エル・ハガルはカイロの北東１００キロほどのところにある。直行バスはないので、まずは長距離バスでイスマーリヤに行って、そこでセルビス（乗 り合いのバン）に乗り換えてサウードに向かう。そこで降りたら、今度はミニトラックに相乗りしてやっと到着する。もちろんタクシーをチャーターすればもっ と楽にいけるのだが、楽することが旅の目的じゃないので、ごく普通のエジプト人と同じように上のようなルートをとった。サーン・エル・ハガルは古代エジプ ト、大王ラムセス２世に由来すると言われる遺跡だ。といっても、現場は掘り散らかされたような感じに、いろいろな石像だとかオベリスクが置かれているだけ だ。まだまだ発掘が進んでいないらしい。なんだか夢のある遺跡だ。
　次の目的地はアブ・ミーナーだ。ここは、アレクサンドリアまで長距離バスか鉄道で行き、そこからセルビスに乗り換えるのだが、「そんな場所はない！」と いわれて困惑したりしたが、やっと「そこなら通り道だ」というセルビスがあったので行くことができた。アブ･ミーナーはコプト教の大教会があることと、 ローマ時代の遺跡がある（遺跡まではいけなかった）。そもそもさ、世界遺産なのですよ、アブ･ミーナーは。それにしては知られていなさすぎだ。

    When I was staying in Cairo, Egypt, I always wondered where to go in each weekend.  Normally, there was only Friday off in the week, so I was thing of day trips most of the time.  It was easy to arrange a day trip to Alexandria, Suez, Port Said and Fayoum, but one I paid visits to these place, then it needed a little research to find a good place to go for the weekend.  Today's theme is Abu Mena and San El Hagar, both of which are located right in the middle of desert, and you could not go there directly from Cairo - needs transfer somewhere, somehow.
    San El Hagar is located about 100 km northeast of Cairo.  Going there, you need to take a long distance bus to Ismailia, and then change to "service", which is like a shared taxi., and go to Saud.  From Saud, you need to share a ride on a truck to reach San El Hagar.  It would be easier if you charter a taxi, but doing it easy way is not the essence of the trip.  San has a ruin that trace back to the days of Ramses II, the Great King of Egypt.  But San el Hagar has not been dug much, and many things are still to be found about the ruin. 
    Abu Mena is located 100 km west of Alexandria.  You may take a bus or train to Alexandria and then change to a service.  I tell you it is not so easy.  I asked about twenty Service drivers, and every one said they never heard of Abu Mena.  Abu Mena, by the way, is listed in the World Heritage by Unesco, but nobody seem to care.  After all, I found a service that passes there.  Abu Mena is an interesting site with a Roman ruin (which I did not have time to visit)  and a grand Coptic Church and Monastery.
