カイロ滞在の最後の日、たまたま祝日にぶつかって、意外な休日を一日得 た。どうやって過ごそうか考えた結果、サッカラにいくことにした。サッカラというのはカイロの南50キロほどの場所にある。エジプトの国産ビールの名前にもなっている。エジプ トでももっとも古いといわれるジゼル王の階段ピラミッドが有名だ。
　普通の観光客は、観光バスに乗っていくか、あるいはタクシーをチャーターして行くのが普通だ。しかしぼくは、ギザのピラミッドのそばまでバスで行き、そ こからさらにサッカラ行きのバスに乗り継いぐことにした。タクシーを使ってもいいのだが、どうせ後で料金をめぐってトラブルになり、不愉快な思いをするの は目に見えている。バスのほうが気楽だし、不快な思いをすることはまずない。これでは、旅の楽しみは半減どころが、なくなってしまう。
　最初にバスを乗り継いでサッカラの階段ピラミッドに行き、そこから歩くかバスに乗るかしててサッカラの町に行く。さらに足を伸ばして、近くにあるメン フィスに立ち寄ってから帰る。これがこの日の旅程のすべてだ。後は出たとこ勝負、人に聞いたりして何とか帰り着くだろう。おぼつかないときはタクシーに 乗っちゃえば、お金が解決してくれる。こう、いい加減な調子で旅は始まった。
　

    When I was in Cairo, I found that the last day of my stay there was a holiday.　　I got a day off rather unexpectedly.  I started to wonder how I would spend the day.  Soon I came to a conclusion - I go to Sakkara!  Sakkara is located about 50 km south of Cairo, and is the name of local Egyptian beer brand, too.  Sakkara is a site for the Step Pyramid of King Djoser, which is thought to be the oldest pyramid in Egypt.  
    An ordinary tourist may ride on a tour bus or a taxi.  I would not do this.  I rather take local buses to go there.  I had enough of experiences of having troubles with taxi drivers for prices, which had reduce, or even dissipated the pleasure of travel.
    First I would travel by bus to Sakkara Step Pyramid, and from there I would either take a bus or walk to the town of Sakkara.  From there I would hit for Memphis and then go home.  This was the itinerary only itinerary I set for myself.  Other things as they evolve on site, shall be dealt with on site.  Thus this holiday journey started.
