ベトナムは南北に細長い国だ。北にハノイ、南がホーチミン、旧サイゴン があるが、中部には何があるか。都市としてはダナン市があって、ここはベトナム戦争中に米軍の基地になった場所だ。その近くに、フエとホイアンという二つ の歴史的な町がある。今日紹介するのは、その一つホイアンだ。
　ホイアンは、南シナ海からちょっと入り江を入った奥にある町で、こ こには16世紀以降、ポルトガル人、オランダ人、中国人、日本人が交易のために来航した。日本からも朱印船が訪れており、日本人町さえもあったという。
　旧市街の中央部にある、来遠橋と呼ばれる屋根つきの橋がある。石造の基 礎の上に木造の屋根付きの櫓が載っている。概観はちょっと中国風ではあるが、言い伝えによれば、これは日本人が建設したといわれる橋だ。他にも中国人の立てた会館や旧家などもあって、アジア の文化が溶け合う坩堝（るつぼ）のようだ。散歩するには楽しい町だ。

    Vietnam has a elongated land from the north to the south.  In the north is Hanoi, and in the south is Ho Chi Minh - or Saigon.  Then what is  in the middle? There is a city of Danang, and also there are two old towns - Hue and Hoi An.  Hoi An is what I want to show today.
    Hoi An is located on a river connecting to the South China Sea. Since 16th Century, here have come Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese and Japanese on the ship for trade.  There were regular trade ships from Japan, and there had even been a Japanese town here in Hoi An. 
    There is an old bridge in the middle of the old town.  This is a stone bridge with a wooden cover on top.  Despite its rather Chinese look, the bridge is said to have been built by Japanese.  In Hoi An there are Chinese merchants halls and residents, the city provides a very stimulating walk into the Asian melting pot.
