フォートとは要塞のことだ。イギリス時代のムンバイの古い市街地の中央部分がフォートと呼ばれる。
　フォートには、大英帝国の栄華を感じさせる建物が多く残されている。その代表が駅だろう。フォートの北側にあるヴィクトリア・ターミナスと呼ばれる鉄道 駅は、これが駅舎か、嘆息が漏れるほど、豪華である。駅の近くには、ムンバイ市庁などいくつかの公共の建物があるが、これらも駅と歩調を合わせるように、 華麗で美しい。東側の地区は、イギリス人の住宅のあった場所らしく、当時の高級な郊外住宅が並ぶ、瀟洒な地区だ。そこにはイギリスにあやかろうと、「ブリ タニア」という名前をつけた食堂さえもがある。
　フォートは大英帝国の残り香があちこちにある。

   The fort means fortification, and refers to the walled part of a city.  The old center of Mumbai is called Fort today.
    In Fort Area there are a number of old English buildings.  The topmost is probably the building of Victoria Terminus.  The buildings are breath taking and are in magnificent shape.  In its vicinity there are other old buildings such as the one used for the city hall.  In the eastern part of Fort there is an old residential area where a number of old mansions are remaining.  There is even a small restaurant named "Britannia" in this quarter.
