バンコクはチャオプラヤ川の河口近くの低地にある。アユタヤの都がたびたびビルマに攻められ、新しい都とされたのがバンコクの対岸、トンブリ 地区だ。低地を開発するために排水用の運河が掘られ、その土が宅地の造成の盛り土に利用された。バンコク側も事情は同じだが、バンコク側では多くの運河が 埋め立てられて、大通りに変身した。トンブリ側では運河が網の目のように残った。バンコクの大都市から川の挟んだ向こう側のトンブリには、田舎くさく人情 味の感じられる「下町」が今でもある。それは、渡し舟でいえば、およそ5分ほどの距離でしかない。
　トンブリは古くから開けた町だ。外国勢力の痕跡もあちこちに残る。パクロン市場の向かい側あたりには、由緒正しいポルトガル教会、サンタクルーズ教会が ある。また華僑系の住民が多いのもトンブリの特徴だ。あちこちに古い中国寺院がある。
　もう一つ、トンブリで忘れてはならないのは、王室の船の博物館だ。ここに行くには大通りでタクシーを降りて、運河に沿った小道を歩いていかなければいけ ない。博物館といっても、ここは王室が王室のイベントなどに使う船（バージ）を収蔵しているのだ。どれも美しく装飾され、金ぴかに塗られている。その船 は、年に一度、王様の誕生祝い（12月6日）には博物館を出て川面を飾ることになる。去年（2005年）は王様の即位60周年記念のイベントが華々しく行 われた。

　　
   Bangkok is located on a low lying area along the Chaopraya River.  The capital city of the Thai Kingdom was moved from Ayutthaya to Thonburi, when the Burmese put an offensive to Ayutthaya and captured the city.  In order to develop the low lying area, canals were excavated for drainage, and the soil was used for embankment.  On the Bangkok side, the canals were gradually filled up to make streets, but on the Thonburi side canals remained like a web net.  Apart only 5 mines away from the metropolis of Bangkok on a river boat, Thonburi is very much like a downtown with warm human feelings.
    As Thonburi is an old town, there are many traces of foreign cultures too.  Opposite the Paak Klong market, there is an old Portuguese church named Santa Cruz Church.  In the area, there are many Chinese population and there are quite a few Chinese temples, too.
    Another thing that you should not forget is the Royal Berge Museum.  To go there, you have to get off a taxi and walk the last 10 minutes in a small lane along canals to reach there.  This museum houses the berges, or the boats, that are used in various royal events.  The berges are beautifully decorated and colorfully pained.  The berges are taken out in annual events such as the King's birthday celebration.
