写真にもいろいろな撮り方があります。美しい風景を撮るために三脚をすえて、日がな光の具合を待つ人もいます。色とりどりの季節の花を、近い距離から撮る、接写写真も人気のある対象です。美しいモデルに浴衣や水着を着せて撮る、モデル撮影会などというのも、アマチュア写真家たちに人気のイベントです。事件や事の一瞬をとらえる報道写真、というジャンルもあります。私の写真はちょいと違います。自分の写真を時々、「ぶらパチ写真」と呼びますが、それは文字通りぶらりと町に出かけて、見たままをパチリと写真に撮るからです。もうすこし上品に、「散歩写真」とい人もいます。英語では、そのまんまを写すという意味で、Candid Photographyという言い方がありますが、これもらパチ写真と同類、と考えてよいでしょう。
ということになりますと、「ぶらパチ写真」の対象は、町のなにげない風景が中心になります。観光地でもなく、風光明媚な景勝地でもない、ただの町。なんの事件も起きていない、どこにでもある普通の町とそこで暮らす人々。そんなモン写して何が面白いの？
ご心配なく。これが面白いのです。ぶらパチ写真には３つの要素があります。
第一は人。楽しそうだったり悲しそうだった、あるいは誇らしげだったり不安だったり。人の表情は千差万別です。また、日本にいるとあまり気づきませんが、肌の色や服装、話す言語も国や都市によってさまざまです。普段の暮らしの中で人々が見せる何気ない表情、これを捉えることがぶらパチ写真の第一歩です。
第二は町、都市です。「神が田園を創り、人が都市を造った」という言葉がありますが、都市は人間の営みによって築かれていくものです。都市の風景を比べてみても、建物の色や形、材質などが都市によって異なります。道や橋、広場も異なる雰囲気を持っています。世界にはどれ一つ、同じ都市はありません。暮らしの場所になっている都市の多様な表情を捉えること、これがぶらパチ写真の「奥行き」というものです。
最後に、地域や国によって異なる印象。これはもう、文化とか文明としかいいようがないものです。たとえば混み合う日曜日の市場。夕食の材料を買い求める人々。おんなじことをしていても、バンコクの市場とロンドンの市場は、これはもう全然違う。人々の顔から着ている洋服、看板の文字、並んででいる品物や並べ方まで、全然違うのです。それが文化、というもの。写真一枚に文化まで写しこめれば、大成功といえます。

There are a number of ways to take photographs. Some people try to take photographs of beautiful landscape, waiting for good lighting with a camera on a tripod. Others take close-up photographs of flowers. Many amateur photographers like to attend sessions with models in kimonos or in bikinis. There is a category of news photography also.
My photography is slightly different from these. I sometimes call my way of photography, "Trot 'n Shoot Photography", as I trot in the city, point the camera and shoot whatever I see. In English, there is a phrase called candid photography, which is more or less the same as the "Trot 'n Shoot Photography".
Therefore, the object of "Trot 'n Shoot Photography" will naturally be a routine view in the city. Not a tourist site, not a beautiful natural landscape, but a common place townscape; common people living daily lives in ordinary cities and towns. What's so interesting about it?
Don't you worry - it is amusing. There are three factors in the "Trot 'n Shoot Photography" that will make it attractive.
The first factor is the people. People have various expressions; happy, sad, proud or anxious. Depending on the nation, people have different outlook, wear different clothes and speak different languages. Grasping the candid expression of the people in day to day lives is the first step of the "Trot 'n Shoot Photography".
The second is the city. There is a saying that the God has created the country, and the man made the city. The city is the product of human activities. Comparing the cities in the world, the color, shape and texture of buildings are all different. Roads, bridges and squares are all different. No two cities in the world are exactly the same. Visualizing the various expressions of the cities adds to the dimension of the "Trot 'n Shoot Photography".
The last but not the least is the atmosphere of the place, which differ by the nations and cities. This could only be accounted for as the culture or civilization. If you take a photo of a crowded market on a sunday afternoon with people buying ingredients for the supper, the scene would naturally differ if you were in Bangkok or in London. Not only the outlook of people, but also letters on signboards, the variety of foods on the wagon and how they are on display, all differ. That is the culture of the nation. If you could capture this in a single photograph, that is a great success for the "Trot 'n Shoot Photography".
