バンコクの中心部からやや北によったあたりにパトナムと呼ばれる地区がある。本当はプラトゥー・ナーム（Pratu Nam)といい、プラトゥー＝門、ナーム＝水だから、水門という意味だ。ちょうどこの地区を東西に運河があり、その運河に洪水防止のための水門があったの が名前の由来なのだろう。タイ語では「PR」のように子音が重なると、後の音が聞こえにくい（タイ人には聞こえるらしいが）ので、日本人にはパトナムと聞 こえるわけだ。
　この町は衣料の町だ。町にはTシャツからポロシャツ、ワイシャツ、スーツにいたる様々な衣料の店が並ぶ。卸しの店も少なくないから、タイの衣料を輸入し てやろうなどと思っている人も買いにくるし、ごく普通の消費者も多い。パトナムがわかり安いのは、どこにいても地上８４階（８８階、と書かれたものもあ る）の、ペンシルのようなこのビルが見えることだろう。パトナムの臍（へそ）、といったら少々下品かな。バイヨークの最上階には回転する展望台があるの で、晴れた日に上がってみるのもいい。

    A littel north of the city center of Bangkok is an area called Pratunam.  Pratu means a gate, and Nam means water, so Pratunam is a watergate.  There is a canal running east-west in this area, and probably there was a water gate for flood control here, and thus the name.
    Pratunam is a fashion town.  In the area there are plenty of shops selling T-shirts, casual and formal wear and shoes, too.  There are wholesale outlets and professionals trying to import Thai garment may strol here.  Of course, there are a number of ordinary consumers seeking good quality garment at discount prices.  What makes the shopping in Pratunam easy is the tall building of Baiyork Sky Hotel that could be seen from everywhere in the town.  This 84 stories (some say 88) building is the landmark of Pratunam.  On a sunny day, you may try to go up to the top floor where there is a revolving lookout.
