バンコクから西へ2時間ほど走ると、サムート・ソンクラムという町がある。それほ ど大きな都市ではないが、日本でいえば「県庁所在都市」だ。戦場に掛ける橋、カンチャナブリを流れるメクロン川（クワイ川）の河口にある町だ。今回は、タ イ人の お友達、ペウさんが案内をしてくれたので、バンコクから片道、車で２時間あまりの日帰りツアーとなった。
　地方の中小都市は、特徴がなくてあまり魅力がない、ということが多いのが通り相場だが、このサムート・ソンクラム市は元気がある。この町の中心部の運河 で、水上マーケットを復活し、お客さんが集まっている、という。タイの水上マーケットといえば、観光地として有名なダムヌン・サドゥアック（写真館７２） が有名だが、ここは観光客に受 けるような演出 が強い。ところがサムート・ソンクラムの水上マーケットは昔からの運河の暮らしそのままで、ローカル色が強い。またダムヌンサドゥアックが毎日、早朝から 昼くらいまで賑わうのに対して、 こちらは週末のみ、それも昼間ではなくて、夕方から夜に賑わう。夜の水上マーケットと呼ばれるのはそのためだ。つまりは、ダムヌン・サドゥアックとは時間 も対象も異なるから、競争にならないのかもしれない。ちょっと田舎っぽい 水上マーケットでのんびりと買い物をしたり、お菓子やご飯を買い食いするのは、スローな週末の過ごし方として結構いける。
 　残念ながら写真には写せなかったが、メクロン川の河畔には、夜になると一斉に光る蛍の木が見られる。昔、新聞の日曜版で、漫画家の手塚治虫 があこがれていたという記事を読んだことがある。この日もボートをチャーターして河口に出かけてみると、いくつか 蛍の木を見ることができた。木に止まった無数の蛍が光を出すのだが、不思議なことにそのリズムが一定して、無数の光が一斉に明滅する。闇夜の河畔にボーっ と淡く光る木、不可思議な光景だった。何枚かシャッターを切ったが、後で現像てみると写真は取れていなかった。 次に機会があるなら、そのときは三脚もって写真を撮りたいものだ・・・。

　　
    About 2 hours drive from Bangkok, there is a city called Samut Songkram.  This is not a very big city, but this is the capital city of Samut Songkram Province.   The city is located at the mouth of the Mae Klong river that passes through Kanchanaburi.  This time a Thai friend Ms. Peo guided us around for a day tour from Bangkok.
    Most of the local cities look the same and uninteresting, so they say, but the Samut Songkram is different.  For some years, the local people are making efforts to revive and recreate a floating market in the existing canal, and this is attracting lots of people from the surrounding areas.  The famous floating market in Thailand is the one at Damnoen Saduak (Photo Gallery 72), which is not far from this place to the north.  The floating market in Damnoen Saduak is more for the tourists, and is open everyday from the early morning to the mid-day.  The floating market here is more for the local people, and is open only on weekends from the late afternoon to the evening.  The two things thus do not compete with each other. It is a good and cool pastime for the slow weekend to stroll around the little country looking floating market, picking food from stalls and munching cakes.
