バンコクから北へ1時間ほど、世界遺産に指定されたアユタヤの手前にバンパインという小さい町がある。鉄道で行けば、アユタヤ駅の一つ手前だ が、鈍行列車しか止まらない小さい駅だ。このバンパインは、タイでは知らない人はいないくらい有名なのだが、それは国王の夏の離宮があるからだ。遠足や社 会科見学、あるいは家族旅行で一度は必ず来る場所なのだという。
　バンパインの離宮はアユタヤ時代の１７世紀、時の王がチャオプラヤ川に浮かぶバンパイン島に僧院を建て、さらにその南に池と宮殿を建築したことに始ま る。その後アユタヤの陥落を経て打ち捨てられていたが、１９世紀に入り王族の離宮および迎賓館として再建された。バンパインの再建に力を尽くしたのが、 ラーマIV世(1851−1868）、 ラーマV世（1868 – 1910）の父子だ。ラーマIV世は別名をモンクート王といい、西洋式の教育を子弟にほどこしたことでも知られる。タイでは不人気の「王様と私」は、その 家庭教師の英国人が書いた手記をもとに映画化されたものだ。だから「王様」はラーマIV世、モンクート王ということになる。
　その長子のラーマV世は、別名チュラロ ンコン大王と呼ばれる名君である。チュラロンコン大王は即位の直後に訪欧して見聞を広めると、帰国してタイの近代化に向けた都 市整備や社会改革を推し進めた。チュラロンコン大王は西洋建築を愛し、バンパイン宮殿にも見事な建物正面（ファサード）を持つ西洋建築が残されている。細 部にまで心が行き届いており、 見事な建築世界をつくりだしている。贅を尽くした建造物を数多く作らせたことから、財政を圧迫したという批判もあるが、贅沢のないところには美も育たない のかもしれない。
　　
    There is a small town called Bang Pa-In, next to Ayuthaya, the World Heritage city.  If you get on the train, Bang Pa-In is one stop before Ayuthaya, though you may be careful as only the local train stops there.  This small town is famous in Thailand for the King's summer palace there.  Most Thai must have come here at least once, either on a school excursion or on a family trip.
    The  palace was built in 17th century under the Ayuthaya Regime for a monastery on an isle in the Chaopraya river, and then a palace and a pond attached to it.  This palace was later discarded as the fall of the Ayuthaya kingdom, until in 19th century the site was rebuilt for a summer palace and a state guest house.  The figures behind this restoration was the two kings, Lama IV (King Mongkut) and Lama V (King Churalonkong).  King Mongkut was adoptive to the western civilization and hired English tutor to his sons and daughters.  This is how the story of "King and I", which is very unpopular in Thailand even today came about.
    King Churalonkong toured in Europe shortly after he became the king, and carried out various social reforms that paved the road to the modernization.  King Churalongkong had a love of western architecture, and this could be seen in some of the buildings built under his direction in Bang Pa-In.
