シリアの首都・ダマスカスは、世界で「最古の首都」とか、「中東で最古の都市」などの枕がつくことが多い。その歴史は紀元前3000年とい う、気の遠くなるくらいの太古に遡るらしい。ダマスカスが重要な都市として確立されたのは紀元前1100年ころ、アラビア半島の遊牧民、アラム人の国の中 心、アラム・ダマスカスになって以来だという。
　多くの歴史的な都市が途中で放棄されたり棄却されて、いわば都市の遺構のみが残っているのに対して、ダマスカスは都市が住み続けられてきた。その点に着 目して、「住み続けられた世界最古の都市」という言い方もあるようだ。どれが正しい形容詞なのかはともかく、世界でも最古の一つ、とにもかくにもやたらに 古い古代の都市であるといって間違いないだろう。
　そのダマスカスに行く機会が訪れた。羽田から関西空港に飛び、インド洋を飛び越えて中東のドバイに降り、さらに乗り継いでダマスカスに到着する。片道に 丸一日近くかかるので、行程は3泊6日（機中2泊）というとんでもないものになった。まあ始めての国、初めての都市に行けるのであれば文句は言わない。最 近、これまでいったことのない国に行くという経験は稀になっていて、久しぶりの経験だった。
  ダマスカスはシリアの首都であり、政治経済の中心地だ。その人口200万人を擁する市街地のほとんど真ん中あたりに、ダマスカス旧市街地がある。ちょうど 楕円形のような形に城壁がめぐらされ、全部で7つの門がある。東西方向に長く、約1.5ｋｍほどある。ユネスコの世界遺産に登録されている。
　旧市街地の最大のみどころは、紀元705年に建造されたウマイヤド・モスクだろう。これは現存する世界最古のモスクであるという。広い中庭をいただき、 その両側に建物が向き合うように立ち、中庭を柱廊が周りを囲んでいる。ふと、ウマイヤド・モスクはイタリアの古都ヴェニスのサンマルコ寺院に似ている、と 思った。もともとこの場所にはキリスト教会があり、これを改造してモスクにしたという。
　旧市街地は細い道路が迷路のように連なり、イスラムの迷宮という言葉がぴったり来る。

   I had a chance to visit Damascus recently.  It was a 20 hour trip from Tokyo to Damascus, via Dobai.  I have never been to Syria before. Damascus, the capital city of Syria, is sometimes said to be the "oldest capital city in the world", or "the oldest city in the middle east".  The history of Damascus  traces back to B.C. 3000 or so, they say.  The establishment of Damascus was said to be around B.C. 1100, when the Aramaic built their capital city here. called Aram Damascus. 
    While many of the ancient cities were later abandoned, Damascus has been continually inhabited without interruption.  So some people say that Damascus is "the Oldest City that has been continually inhabited."  Whatever the correct tile is, Damascus is undoubtedly very, very old and authentic.
    Damascus is the capital of Syria, and is the political and economical center.  The old town of Damascus is located near the city center.  The old town is surrounded by the city wall with seven gates.  The town is about 1.5 km long, east-west.  The old town of Damascus is registered in UNESCO World Heritage.
    A must-see site in the old town is the Umayad Mosque, which is said to be the oldest mosque in the world, built in A.D 705.  There is a large inner court inside, and there are two buildings on the both sides of it, and a gallery with pillars surrounds the courtyard.  I had a feeling of deja vu.  Yes, it resembles Saint Mark's Square in Venice. I learned that Umayad Mosque was refurbished from a Christian Church that was there when it was converted to a mosque. 
    The old town has a network  of lanes that connects and bifurcates like a life form, and forms something that could be called a labyrinth.
