バンコクには無数といっていいくらい、町の隅々にマーケットがある。天秤棒で担いでくるだけの簡単な屋台などがいくつか集ったものが、たぶん 一番簡単なマーケットだろう。人通りの多い通路などに露店商が店をだし、客がついてくると露店が増え、中庭や空き地が屋台でいっぱいになる。これが市場、 タイ語ではタラートだ。バンコク市内には公共の住宅団地がたくさんあるが、その団地に張り付くように、必ずといって良いほど市場ができている。市場が賑 わってくると、だんだん周辺からの買い物客も増え、規模が大きくなっていく。
　市場で売っているものといえば、青果・肉類・魚介・果実・雑貨などが通り相場だ。しかし市場の中には特別な品目を得意にしているものも少なくない。以前 に紹介した パークロン市場は青果と切り花、パトナム市場は衣料、クロントイ市場は魚介といった具合。営業時間に個性をもたせた市場としては、週末にしか開かない ウィークエンド・マーケット、夜しかやらないルンビニ・ナイトバザールなどがある。
　露店の市場をそっくり呑み込んで、ビルの中に入れてしまったのが、マーブン・クロンというショッピング・センターだ。露店商とどうやって話をつ けたのかは知らないが、マーブンクロンには狭い間口のテナントが、まるで市場の中のように密集している。ここは雑貨が得意品目で、女子高生に人気のショッ ピング・スポットでもある。
　最近になって、郊外に住宅が開発されるようになると、環状道路のような都市の外側の通りにそって巨大なショッピングセンターが建設されるようになった。 負けてはいられじと、都心部でもメガモールを開発する動きがある。つい最近は若者の多いサイアームという地区で、東南アジアでも屈指の規模を誇る、パラゴ ン・ショッピングセンターがオープンした。
　さまざまなマーケットが賑やかに混在する姿は、活気溢れるタイの今日を象徴しているかのように見えた。

  There are numerous markets in the nooks and corners of Bangkok.  The simplest may be a few venders with a shouldering pole selling some daily goods.  On a sidewalk or a little spacious street, a cart may appear with some goods for sale, and if the fist cart does well, then a lot more merchants follow, and a vacant land will then be occupied by a number of push carts food stalls.  This is how the market, or talat in Thai is formed.  Once established, the market shall attract people from the surrounding areas and start to grow in size..
    The goods dealt in the market shall range commonly from vegetables, fruits, fish and meat and daily goods.  Some markets however has some specialty goods:  Paak Klong market (see Photo Gallery 83) specializes in vegetables and cut flowers; Pratu Nam market specializes in garment; and Klong Toei market in fish.  Business days and time may differ from one to another.  There is a market open only on weekends, called the Weekend Market in Chatchack.  There is also a market only open in the night time - Lumbini Night Bazar.
    Maboonklong Shopping Center, which is popular among young people, is said to have accommodated push carts and open stalls in one building.  Thus it has numerous shop houses with narrow storefront., most of which selling sundry goods and fancy products. 
    Recently, suburban malls have been open on suburban ring roads.  The city center countered with a Mega-Mall near Siam Square.  Paragon, as it  is named, is one of the largest in the Southeast Asia.
     I felt that the mixuture of all different types of markets, all very active, symbolizes the heat and energy of the Thai economy on the rise.
