　カンボジアの首都、プノンペンから北西へ４０ｋｍほど行ったところにウドンという町がある。ウドンの周辺はメコン川の支流、トンレサップ川にそった平地だが、ほど遠くからぽっこりとした丘が平地に突起して見えてくる。近づいていくとその丘には搭 のような建造物がいくつか角のように屹立している。普通の田舎まちみたいだけれど、いろいろ な意味で歴史のある町なのだ。
　第一は、このウドンがクメール王国の王都であったことだ。クメール王国はアンコールに王都を構え殷賑を極めるのだが、その後はシャム（現在のタイ）に王 都を追われた後、王座は転々とする。最終的に現在のようにプノンペンに王宮が営まれるまで、1618〜1860年までの200年あまり、この地ウドンに王 都が置かれた。カンボジア暗黒の時代に、クメール・ルージュの砲撃によって多くの歴史的遺産が失われてしまった。
　ウドンには17世紀ころから日本人町が栄えたという。この地はメコン川からトンレサップ川を遡上すれば、外洋からかなり大きな船で到達できる。タイの日 本人町が栄えたアユタヤも同様な立地だ。現在、日本人町は跡形もないが、この地で食された麺が日本に伝わり、その名前として町の名前が使われた、という説 がある。真偽のほどは確かめようがないが、あり得そうな話である。
　もうひとつ、ウドンの近くの川沿いに中州の島、コー・チェン（チェン島）がある。ここには川を遡上している時に嵐にあって難破した中国人たちが住みつい たという言い伝えがある。現在、チェン島は彫金の産地となっている。村のあちこちの家からカンカン・トントンと金属を叩き成型する音がしてくる。

    There is a town called Oudong to the northwest of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.  Around Oudong is a flat land along the Tonle Sap river, which is a large tributary of the Mekong.  When you approach from afar, you may notice a small hill in the flat land.  As you come close, you may notice some horn like things sticking out from the hill.  Despite the look of an ordinary rural town, Oudong is indeed a special city as you see.
    First of all, Oudong used to house the throne of the Khmer Kingdom.  The Kingdom flourished to its peak during the Angkor period where the throne was set in and around Angkor Wat.  When the Siamese (Thai of today) won the supremacy of the region, the kingly throne was moved away from Angkor to other places in the present day Cambodia until finally it settled in Phnom Penh.  From 1618 to 1860, the throne was set in Oudong.  During the dark days of Khmer Rouge, the historical sites of Oudong were heavily bombarded and damaged.
    Another thing to remember about Oudong, is the fact that there was a Japanese town in 17th century.  This city has an access to the Ocean through the Tonle Sap and the Mekong rivers, which is the same locational condition with the Thai city of Ayutaya where a Japanese town was established in the same era.  The evidence of the Japanese town is completely lost today.
    One more thing to be said about Oudong is the ciselement craftsmanship.  There is a holm called the Cheng Island in the Tonle Sap river.  Some say that long time ago a ship carrying Chinese craftsman shipwrecked in the river and settle in the Cheng island.  The offspring had become the ciselement craftsmen today, the story goes.  As you visit the village, you may hear some clanging sound coming from households, here and there.
