バンコクの夜は賑やかだ。もちろん、普通にイメージされるナイト・ライフといえば食事や飲み屋、さらにはもっと品のよろしくないカラオケ・ハ ウスやオカマ・ショーまで、各種のお遊びが夜の街には溢れている。私はといえば、後者のような遊びは年々、あまり楽しいと感じなくなっているために、かな り健全路線だ。そのヘムレン流、バンコクの夜の楽しみ方を紹介することとしよう。
　まずは刻々と空の色が変化する暮色を楽しむ。チャオプラヤ川沿い、シェラトン・グランデ・ホテルの隣にリヴァー・シティーというショッピングセンターが あるのだが、その屋上にバンコク唯一ではないかと思われる「屋上ビアホール」がある。ここは料理が美味しいわけではない（失礼！）が、景色だけは素晴らし い。赤々とした夕日はチャオプラヤの対岸、トンブリの方向に沈んでいく。　暮れなずむチャオプラヤ川に大きな観光船、貨物船が行き来し、時に渡し舟が大き な船を掻き分けるように川を渡っていく。
　もうひとつの夕日の名所はバニヤン・ツリーというホテルだろう。この高層ビルのルーフトップには、なんと吹きさらしのオープンエアカフェがある。ここ からの夕景の眺めは素晴らしいの一言。ただし料金はお高いのでご注意を。
　バンコクの夜といえば、ロックやクラシックのコンサートも盛んだ。毎年11月ころに開催されるバンコク音楽祭のころには、かなりの有名どころの公演が続 く。去年はロシアのバレー団、スタニフスラフスキー・バレーなどが来泰公演した。バンコク交響楽団も時々公演している。タイで人気のロック・グループにカ ラバオがあるが、カラバオのコンサートは若者に大人気で、タイ北西部・イサン地方の民謡のメロディーを取り入れたりしたカラバオ独特の音楽とリズムに体ご と預けてしまうのも楽しいかもしれない。
　夜のお祭りといえば、11月の満月にあわせて開催される灯篭流し、ロイクラトーンだ。タイの庶民、特に子供たちに人気のお祭りだ。この夜は市内のいたる ところ、水のある場所には灯篭を持った子供たちが集結し、蝋燭をともした灯篭を流しながら祈りを捧げる。

   The night in Bangkok is never boring.  Common menu for the night life is dinner and some drinks, or if you are more adventurous, you could go to Karaoke shops or Show Pubs.  I have come to feel very excited with the latter kind of night life lately, and chose to be more square, so to speak.  I will let you peek into my way of enjoying the Bangkok night life, if you would.
    First you must enjoy the changing colors of the sky during the dusk.  Along the Chaopraya river, there is River City Shopping Center just next to Sheraton Grande Hotel.  On the roof top there is a B-B-Q house, with a grandeur view of the Chaopraya.  Foods may not be so superb, but the view is really wonderful.  With the panoramic sky changing colors as the sun set into the direction of Thonburi on the other side of the Chaopraya river, you could see a number of boats running up and down the river, or small boats crossing it.
    Another unforgettable site for the view of evening dusk is the roof top cafe of Banian Tree Hotel in Sathorn Street.  This high-rise hotel provides an "open air" cafe on the roof top!  Have a glass of beer and enjoy the view as you ease, but beware of the bill, as the prices are generally high.
    Other enjoyment of the Bangkok night may be concerts.  There is an annual series of classical concerts in November, when some big names visit Bangkok to play.  Last year there were ballet performances by Stanislovsky Ballet of Moscow, among others.  You could also check out the local orchestra, Bangkok Symphony Orchestra.  If your tastes are more towards modern upbeat things, you may try going to a concert by a Thai hero, Karabao.  Karabao concerts are always heavily crowded with an enormously enthusiastic young audience.  His music is rock 'n roll with a taste of the Thai folk music, particularly of Northeastern part called Isaan. 
   There is the famous Loi Kratoon festival celebrated at night with lanterns released in any open water body nearby.  This is a popular festivals for the Thai, particularly the young.  Everywhere where there is water, kids and parents gather with lanterns in their arms, making blessing for good.
