♪富士山は日本一の山、そんな歌があったが、富士山は日本一高いだけではない。冬の晴れた日には、東京の都心からもその姿が遠く西の彼方に望まれる。子 供のころから東京の西部で育った私は、冬の朝に通学の途中で雪を被った富士山を眺めるのが日課だった。富士の姿は、山の手腺の車窓からも（新宿と新大久保 の間あたり）、くっきりと見えた。東京に「富士見坂」という地名が多いのも頷ける。富士の姿を見ることは、辺鄙な地を開拓して移り住んだ東国の人々に許さ れた、ささやかな贅沢なのかもしれない。
　その富士を拝みに箱根に出かけた。箱根は江戸時代後期、庶民が旅行をすることが許されるようになると、湯治場として栄えた。それ以降、西洋人や裕福な日 本人の避暑地として発展し、現在は東京からの日帰りや泊まりがけの行楽地となっている。日本を訪れる外国人を案内する場所としても好適だ。なんといっても 富士山＜フジヤマ＞が間近に眺められるのだから。
　富士山というのはやはり、日本一の山だ。まっすぐに立ち上がり、殆ど回転対称な姿、そして麓から頂上に至る双曲線のような美しいフォルム。このような完 璧ともいえる姿の山が他にあるだろうか。東海道新幹線に乗っても、あるいは国内線の飛行機に乗っても、富士山が見えると得をした気分になり、見えないと損 をしたように感じる。姿を見るだけで嬉し楽しくしてくれるのが富士山だ。

   There is a popular song in Japan, which goes, "With its head over the clouds, Mt. Fuji is the supreme mountain in Japan".  Mt. Fuji is not only the highest (3,776 m), but is the supreme mountain in Japan.  As a child raised in the western part of Tokyo, I used to see Mr. Fuji with a snow cap in every winter .morning on my way to school.  Mt. Fuji could be seen even in the center of Tokyo - say from the Yamanote Line trains.  Glimpse of Mr. Fuji in every day life must have been a humble gift to the people who came to then remote Eastern Region from the capital to build up a new city in Tokyo.
    On a clear winter day, I went to Hakone on the foot of Mt. Fuji.  Hakone became popular towards the end of the Edo Period, when traveling were allowed for ordinary people.  People rushed to Hakone for hot springs for curing illnesses.  Ever afterwards, Hakone became a popular summer resort for the foreigners or well-to-do Japanese during the Meiji and Taisho Eras.  Today Hakone is probably the most popular get-away from Tokyo.  This is of course much beloved by foreign visitors - because of Mt. Fuji - Fuji-yama.
    Mt. Fuji is indeed the supreme mountain in Japan.  The shape of the mountain is a perfect rotation symmetry, and the silhouette is bounded by a pair of hyperbolic curves.  Mt. Fuji is the wonder of the nature, and no other mountain in the world is as close to perfection as Mr. Fuji.  From the Shinkansen (Bullet) Train or from Airplane, people look for Mr. Fuji - if they see it, they are happy and feel lucky, if not they have to feel sorrowful  .  A glimpse of it makes a change - because it is Mr. Fuji.
