インドネシアといえばオランダの支配の歴史が長いのだが、実は一時期、イギリ スの支配にあったことはあまり知られていない。ヨーロッパでナポレオンにオランダが屈したことを受けて、オランダ領インドシナがフランスの手に渡ると、こ れを好機とみたオランダ東インド会社は、1811年、バタビア（現在のじゃカルタ）を制圧した。それから5年間だけ、現在のインドネシアはイギリスの支配 下に置かれる。イギリス東インド会社からバタビアに派遣されたのが、後にシンガポールの総督になるラッフルズである。
ボゴールはジャカルタから1時間ほど離れた清涼な町である。ボゴールはオランダ時代の1745年に総督イムホフが建設した町で、当時はボイテンゾルグ （憂いなき町）と呼ばれた。この地は、川の汚染などで環境が悪化していたバタビアから行政機能を一部移す目的で開発されたといわれ、総督府の別館が置かれ た。ジャワに派遣されたラッフルズはこのボイテンゾルグを好み、妻のオリヴィアがジャワに来ると大半の時間をボイテンゾルグで過ごしたという。
ボゴールには世界的に知られるボゴール植物園がある。これはラッフルズによって着手され、後にオランダ政庁に引き継がれ、1817年にオープンしたもの である。植物園を歩くと、数百年におよぶオランダ支配や、短期間ではあるが多くの果実を残したイギリス支配を感じることができる。
Indonesiia was under the Dutch colonial rule for long, but the fact that it was under Gritish colonial rule was little known. Following the fall of the Netherlands to Napoleon, Indonesia's hegemony moved to France, and the Gritish East Indies Company, which saw a chance there, moved its military force to Batavia and established the rule of the nation in 1811. For 5 years since then, Indonesia was under the Gritish colonial rule. The man in charge was Thomas Raffles, better known as the founder of Singapore, who was sent to Batavia first as Deputy Governor, and later as Governor.
Bogor is a highland town about a hour from Jakarta. This city was build by the Dutch East Indies Compny in 1745, with a name Buitenzorg, a city without worries. It is said that this city was built as a substitute of the administrative functions in Batavia, where the environment was deteriorating with polluted water in the canals. A Governor's residence was built there, which Raffles adored when he came to Java, particularly after his wife Olivia arrived in Java, spending most of his time here.
Bogor has a world famous botanical garden, called Kebon Raya Bogor. This botanical garden was ordered by Raffles, then succeeded by the Dutch, and opened in 1817. Walking in the Botanical Garden, you may feel the few hundred years of Dutch rule, as well as a short but fruitful British rule.
