アンコール遺跡群から北へ40kmほど行ったあたりに、アンコール帝国の聖なる山・プノンクー レンがあります。「山」といっても乾季であれば車で上がれるくらいだから、丘に近いのかもしれません。とはいえ道幅が狭いので午前は登り、午後は下りの一 方通行だから、午前中に上がら必要があります。今回はその聖なる山プノン･クーレンと、近くにある川底の遺跡ク バール・スピアンをお届けします。
　プノンクーレンは山と川に囲まれた遺跡です。そこここに渓流と滝があり、清涼な空気と水がいっぱいです。プノンクーレンはアンコールの聖なる山と言われ ますが、それには理由が三つあります。一つはジャヤヴァルマン２世（802年〜834年）がここを聖山に見立て、ヒンズー教の祭儀を借りて、神なる王の戴 冠式（802年）を執り行なったこと。アンコール遺跡の主要部分であるアンコール・トム、アンコールワットは13〜14世紀に作られたことを考えると、そ の500年くらいも前に王座が置かれた場所ということになります。第二は、クーレン山がアンコールの平原を潤すシムリアップ川の源流であること。山を縫う ように清らかな水がほとばしる渓流が流れ、あちこちに滝があります。そして第三は、源流の川が信仰の対象になったのか、川底におびただしいシヴァ神やリン ガの彫り物がされていることです。

　プノンクーレンはかなり距離がありますので、自動車などの手配が必要です。雨期には道が通りにくくなります。また、アンコール遺跡の共通パス が使えないので、別に入り口のゲートで20ドルを取られます。これでは何が 「共通」なのかと思いますが、プノンクーレンはそれだけしても訪れる価値のある場所です。

About 40 km north of the main Angkor ruins is the range of sacred moutains for the Angkor Empire called Phnom Kulen.  Depite its name, Phnom Kulen is more of hills than mountains.  The road leading to the mountain top is so narrow that the traffic is restricted - going upward in the morning and downward in the afternoon.  You should set out in the morning to go there.  In this set, I will show the photos of Phnom Kulen together with the adjacent Kbal Spean, where the stone carving can be seen in the river bottom.
      Phnom Kulen is the ruin surrounding by the montains and rivers.  They say it is the sacred place for the Angkor empire, for which I think there are three reasons.  The first reason is that this was the place for the coronation of King Jayavarman II (reign 802 - 834).   The ceremony was said to be done in the traditional Hindu style in the middle of these sacred mountains.  As the major o of the Angkor ruins were built during 12 and 13 centuries, Phnom Kulen seated the king 500 year or so earlier.  The second reason is that Phnom Kulen is where the Siem Reap river, the mother river of Angkor, originates.  The river runs through the ranges making small streams and a number of wataerfalls in the mountain range.  The third is that the river itself was considered holy, and vast volumjes of stone carvings were applied to the bed rocks of the holy river, including the images of Vishna and Shiva and Lingas.
    As Phnom Kulen is distant from Siem Reap, you need to have transportation such as cars.  Duing the rainy season, the roads may not be easy to pass due to wet surface.  To enter the area, you need to pay US$20 per person, as the general pass for the Angkor Ruins does not count here (why, I don't now).  But this place is worth the extra fee.
