タイには歴史的に中国人が多い。その歴史は14世紀くらいまでさかのぼるそうで、特に17世紀以降、中国人がアジア各地で商業を展開する中で シャム湾への華南から多くの中国人が渡来したという。混血も進んでいて、タイ人で中国系の血がながれていない人を探すほうが難しいという説もあるそうだ。 タイ全国の華僑人口は700万人とも言われる。
  バンコクにもいわゆる中華街といわれるヤワラー通りなど、中国文化が華やかに開花 する中国人の街がいくつかある。今日は、そんな華人の泰国首都曼谷（バンコク）を歩いてみよう。折りも折り、中国人のお正月・春節の真っ最中。街は真っ赤 に染まった。

   Historically there are many Chinese in Thailand.  The history of Chinese immigrants to Thailand traces back to the 14th Century, and the number increased since 17th Century when the overseas Chinese developed special merchandising.  Mixing of bloods have proceeded, and at present there are few Thai people without a trace of Chinese blood, so they say.  There are reportedly 7 million Chinese population in Thailand. 
    In Bangkok, there are a few towns where the Chinese tradition is strongly felt, including the China Town along the Yao Warat Street.  Today, we take a walk in such Chinese districts in Bangkok.  It so happened that the time was the Chinese New Year, and the town was all in red.
