ハノイ市の中心、ホアンキエム湖の北東の辺りが李朝時代（１１世紀）から市街地として開けた旧 市街である。その歴史は1000年にも及ぶ。
　この旧市街は一般に36通りと呼ばれる。ちょっときくと36番街と聞き誤るかもしれないが、そうではなくて36の通りがある地区、という意味だ。なんで ３６もの通りがあるかといえば、それぞれの通りが一つの産物を扱う店の集まった通りだったのだそうだ。私はベトナム語はわからないが、ものの本によると 「砂糖通り」、「銀通り」、「皮革通り」、「玉葱通り」、「簾通り」などの通りの名前が残っているようだ。それぞれの通りが仕入先である、ハノイ近郊の農 村との親密な関係をもっていたそうだ。もっとも通りの名前と現在のお店の種類は必ずしも一致しない。
　この３６通りは、ハノイ観光になくてはならない。込み入った路地と複雑な通り、無数ともいえる商店と夥しい露天商。迷宮ということばがあるが、この３６ 通りはまさに現代の迷宮かもしれない。路地の隅で何を発見できるか、その探索の楽しみが３６通り歩きのスリルだ。迷宮の雑貨を見て歩くというのがハノイ観 光のメニューとしてこれほど人を楽しませるとは、意外といえば意外だ。

    Northeast of the central part of Hanoi is an old city of Hanoi since early 11th century.  The history of the old city traces back 1,000 years or so.
    The old town is often called the 36 Streets.  THis is not 36nd Street, but the city with 36 Streets.  The reason why there are 36 streets are that each street had vendors of a specific type - such as the Sugar Street, Silver Street, Leather Street, Onion Street etc.  Each street had a particular suburban village to supply the goods.  Nowadays, however, the name of the street and the goods merchandised does not correspond, they say.
    The old town with 36 streets is indispensable in Hanoi tourism.  Complexly nested streets and alleys where numerous shops and vendors create a real labyrinth of today.  What could be found in this labyrinth is the thrill of the old town.  The variety goods found in the old town attract so many tourists to Hanoi, which I think is a bit mysterious.
