ベトナムの首都、ハノイ。この都市も歴史の波にもまれてきた。ベトナムが南北に分断されていた 時代には、北ベトナムの首都だったし、それよりも前、フラ ンスがインドシナを支配していた頃（19世紀中頃から20世紀初めまで）には仏領インドシナの首都が置かれていた。ハノイの町は、その歴史の重層がそのま ま積み重なって固結したような印象だ。こ の都市は北東側を紅河（ホン河）が流れ、河を通って外洋まで艀が通っている。ホン河にはいくつかの橋が架かっている。今日取り上げるのは、そのうちで最も 古い鉄橋、ロンビャン橋である。
　 ロンビャン橋の設計にあたったのが、パリにエッフェル塔を築いた技術者、グスターヴ・エッフェルであるという説が根強くある。しかしこの橋の工事が行わ れた1899年から1902年に先立つころ、エッフェルはエッフェル塔を完成（1889年）し、さらにパナマ運河に新しい可能性を見出していた。ところが パナマ運河に絡み不正疑惑がおこり1893年から1894年ころには裁判が進行していた。そういうわけで、エッフェル自身がロンビャン橋の設計に関わった という推測は根拠が薄いと私は思っている。
　それはともかく、鉄の骨組みを組み上げる「トラス」という構造の橋は、それこそ エッフェルなど19世紀末の技術者たちが得意とした工法だ。ロンビャン橋ではトラスが波打つように上下して繋がり、独特の景観を作っている。そのハノイのロンビャン橋を歩いてみた。

   Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, has been in the turbulent current of the history.  When Vietnam was split into two, Hanoi was the capital of the North Vietnam.  Before that, the administrative center of the French Indochina was placed in this city.  The town of Hanoi looks like the different layers of its history all consolidated into one.  This city is faced with a river called the Hong, flowing northeast of the city, which connects this capital city to the ports in the coastal areas.  There are a few crossing over the Hong, and today we take a close look at one of them, the Long Bien Bridge, the oldest of all.
    There is a theory that the design of this bridge was conducted by the famous engineer, Gustav Eiffel, who designed the Eiffel Tower of Paris.  In reality, however, Eiffel saw the completion of the Eiffel Tower in 1889, and he was involved in a new project for Panama Canal.  Unfortunately, he became trapped in a scandal in connection with this new project and was fighting a lawsuit in 1893 and 1894.  Therefore, prior to the construction work of Long Bien Bridge (1889 - 1902), I suspect that Eiffel himself was not directly involved in the design work of the bridge.
    Nonetheless, the truss structure adopted in this bridge is the method popular among the structure engineers of the time, including Eiffel.  The Long Bien Bridge has a truss outlook that goes up and down like a wave, giving this bridge a peculiar look.  Here is the report of the Bridge when I visited there.
