カンボジアのシャム湾に面した海沿いの町、シハヌークヴィル。最近カンボジアの新しい国王が指名されたが、シハヌークという名前はシハヌーク国王に由来する。
　40年あまり前、カンボジアにはメコン川の河川港しかなかった。メコン川は下流がベトナム領となったため、ベトナムに意地悪されるとカンボジアは輸出入 ができなくなってしまう。そこでシャム湾に面するこの地に新しい港が建設され、さらに首都プノンペンまで舗装道路が建設された。今ではシハヌークヴィルは カンボジアで唯一の本格的な港がある、戦略的に重要な町でもある。
　それだけではない。シハヌークヴィルには真っ白くサラサラの砂が広がる美しいビーチがある。なかでも最も美しいのはオチティラ・ビーチだろう。シャム湾 に面しているので波も静かで泳ぎやすい。沖にはダイビングに適した島も無数にある。まだまだ訪れるのは、カンボジアに駐在する外国人や、近隣国からの観光 客、カンボジア人のリゾート客くらいだが、近い将来は国際ビーチ・リゾートに変貌するかもしれない。イギリスの新聞Timesは一年ほど前、世界の秘境 ビーチのランキングをしたことがあるが、シハヌークヴィルのオチティラ・ビーチは堂々トップ１０に選ばれた。最近は５スター・グレードの新しいホテルが ソッカ・ビーチにオープンしたりして、国際ビーチリゾートへの道を徐々に歩み始めているように見える。あなたも、まだ静かなビーチをひとり占めしてみては いかがだろうか。

    Recently a new king was nominated for the Kingdom of Cambodia.  This city, Sihanoukville, named after the former king of Cambodia, is a city facing the Siem Bay.
    About 40 years ago, Cambodia had no external port except of a river port on the Mekong River.  As the lower reach of the Mekong was in the Vietnamese territory, Cambodia would be in trouble if the neighboring nation had been mean to them.  Thus a new international port was build in the city of Sihanoukville, and a paved new road connected to the capital city, Phnom Penh.  Today, Sihanoukville is a strategic city for Cambodia with the only full-fledged international port.
    Sihanoukville has more than that.  It has a long line of beautiful beaches covered with rustling white sand.  Nowadays, the visitors are either expatriates living in Cambodia, international visitors from neighboring nations or Cambodian fun lovers, but this place may become a major international resort in a near future.  The Times newspaper of UK listed Sihanoukville as one of the top 10 secret beaches in the world last year.  Sihanoukville seems to be proceeding the way to a international resort as recently a new 5-star grade resort hotel was opened in the Sokka Beach area.  Why not having the future beach resort just for yourself when it is not so popular?
