インドネシアの首都ジャカルタといえば、人 口2000万人を数えるアジアのメガシ ティーというイメージがあるだろう。それも正しいのだが、歴史をさかのぼると、この都市は オ ランダ東インド会社がアジア貿易の拠点として築いた「バタビア」という都市がその原型なのである。ジャカルタを車で走ってもほとんど気づかないかもしれな いが、注意深く路地をたどっていくと歴史都市の面影は意外にくっきりと残されている。今日はジャカルタのもう一つの顔である、歴史都市バタビアを歩いてみ ることにする。Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia with a population exceeding 20 million. Although Jakarta is a modern mega city in one aspect, it is also a city with plentiful historical remains. This city was called Batavia and grew as a strategic center for the Dutch West Indies Company. This historical aspect is hidden in the modern outlook of the busy city, and you may not notice it unless you look very carefully. In this installment, I walked into the lanes of the former Batavia and show the hidden look of the city.
