ベトナムの中南部にニャチャンという町がある。Ｎｈａ　Ｔｒａｎｇと書くからナトランと読みた くなるが、ベトナム語ではＴｒをチャと発音する。この町に滞在したのは、もう10年ほど前のことだ。漁船が湾を埋め尽くすようにたくさん あった。砂浜は長く綺麗ではあったが、まだ外国人旅行者は少なかった。ところが最近はリゾートホテルがいくつもでき、沖合いの島にまでホテルができ、ダイ ビングが楽しめるのだそうだ。ベトナムの「代表的なビーチリゾート」、と紹介するガイドブックもあって、昔のイメージしかない私は少々驚いた。時の流れと いうのは概してそういうものかもしれない。
　朝の浜辺には漁船が溢れ、漁獲を陸揚げしていたり、網の手入れをしてりする光景がみられる。当然、魚市場には漁船の帰る午前中に採りたての魚介が並ぶ。 ニャチャンには海の民・チャム族が築いたチャンパ遺跡もある。海の民の町、ニャチャンを歩いた。

   In the southern area of Vietnam is a city called Nha Trang.  You pronounce this nya-tian, rather than nya-trang..  I stayed in this city about 10 years ago.  There were a number of fishing boats flocking around in the bay.  The beach was long and sandy, but foreign tourists were scarce then.  Nowadays, resort hotels are booming and Nya Trang is becoming a popular beach resort of Vietnam.  There is a resort hotel even on an island off the bay, where you could enjoy diving, they say.  The change surprised me - the time passes.
    In the morning, fishing boats are everywhere in the bay, unloading the day's catch, and fishermen tending fishing nets.  Naturally the fish market has whole range of fishes fresh from the sea.  On a nearby hill there is a ruin from the Champa Empire, inhabited by the Cham, the people of the sea.  Now let us stroll around in the city of the sea, Nya Trang.
