ロシアというといずこか、遥かかなたにある国というイメージがあるかもしれないが、実際はそうでもない。北海道最北の地・稚内の市内からは、ロシア・サハリンの山並みが海の向こうに見える。稚内からおよそ４０ｋｍの宗谷海峡（ラ・ペルーズ海峡）を渡ると、もうそこはロシアなのである。日本から一番近い外国、といってもいいかもしれない。
　サハリンをめぐっては日本とロシアが領土的な関心を持ち、複雑な歴史がある。明治時代には「樺太（からふと）」と呼ばれ、多くの日本人が島の南部に住み、日本の名前のついた町が栄えた。しかし、第２次世界大戦後、サンフランシスコ平和条約（１９５１年）により日本がその領有を放棄したため、日本人は帰国した。戦後は長く一般の渡航が制限されたが、１９９０年代に入ってペレストロイカ政策により、旅行者が自由にサハリンを訪れる事が出来るようになった。
　そのサハリンに行く機会を得た。行きは稚内からフェリーで約5時間、宗谷海峡を渡りコルサコフ港へ、帰りはYS11で札幌・丘珠空港まで飛んだ。サハリンの中心都市は州都ユジノサハリンスクで、空港はここにある。島の南部にコルサコフという港湾都市があり、稚内からのフェリーはこの港に着く。またサハリンの西部にはホルムスクという、もう一つの港湾都市があり、沿海州の諸都市から船はこちらに着く。サハリンの観光シーズンが終わりに近づく9月、この3都市を中心に1週間ほど滞在した。
　　サハリンは原油や天然ガスが産出するため、沿海州のなかでも活気のある地域なのだそうだ。外国企業も多く、話をしたロシア人の女子大生は、外国企業に就職したかったのでサハリンの大学で勉強した、と言っていた。サハリンの町は一見すると旧・ソ連の町だ。ユジノサハリンスクの駅前には今でもレーニン像が立つ。建物も多くはやや無機質な角ばったものが中心だ。それでも日本の機関車D51が展示されていたりして、はっとすることもあった。
　日本からこんなに近くに、ロシアが香る都市がある。北海道まで行く予定があれば、ちょっと足を伸ばしてみてはいかがだろうか。この島は十分に行く価値がある。

    When you hear about Sakhalin, you may think it is somewhere in a distant place from Japan, but that is not true.  Actually, mountains of Sakhalin can be seen from the northern-most town of Japan, Wakkanai.  Sakhalin located only 40 km beyond the La Perouse Channel is one of the closest foreign soil to Japan.
    Sakhalin has a complex history with the territorial interests of Russia and Japan.  During the Meiji Period, the island was called Karafuto in Japan, and a number of Japanese lived there in the cities to which they gave Japanese names.  After the WW2, Japan dispensed the sovereignty over Sakhalin in the San Francisco Treaty in 1951, and henceforward the Japanese residents there left the island.  In the post-war period, visit to Sakhalin was long restricted, until the 1990's when the then Soviet Perestroika policy lifted the restriction.  Now Sakhalin is open for tourists and visitors.
     I had a chance to visit Sakhalin.  On the way in, I took a ferry from Wakkanai crossing the La Perouse Channel to the Port of Korsakov, and flew back to Sapporo by air.  The main city of Sakhalin is Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk where the airport is located.  On the southern tip of the island is Korsakov with the seaport, to which the ferry from Wakkanai arrives.  Another port city is Holmsk with sea transport to and from the Russian maritime provinces.  I visited these three cities in September near the end of the annual tourism season.  
    Sakhalin is a lively place in the region, as the island produces crude oil and natural gas.  Many a young Russian people come to Sakhalin to study at universities or in pursuit of employment.  One young Russian student said that she came here because she wanted to find a job in a foreign firm.  Cities in Sakhalin looked to be like typical Russian cities.  In front of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Station errects the Statue of Lenin.  Most of the buildings are square, plain construction.  Nonetheless, sometimes a curious scene captured my attention - I found the well-known Japanese D51 locomotive on display.  
    Russia is so close to Japan.  If you have a plan to go to Hokkaido (the northern island), you may consider extending your trip to Sakhalin.  The island is very much worth a visit.
