カザフスタンのアルマティ、旧名アルマータはシルクロードのオアシス都市。カザフスタンは全般に乾燥していて大陸性の厳しい冬が特徴だけれど、アルマティーはその南端近くにあり、気候も温和だ。アルマティは天山山脈の支脈であるアラタウ山脈の裾野にある。アラタウ山脈には標高4,000メートルを越える山もあるのだそうだ。1997年に新首都アスタナに遷都するまでは、アルマティーがカザフスタン共和国の首都だった。
    アルマティから郊外の山々に向かうと、３０分ほどで世界的にも高速リンクとして知られるメデオのスケートリンクがある。さらに山道を30分ほど行くと、チンブラックに至る。冬はヨーロピアンな風情のスキーリゾートだ。長いリフトが３基あり、チンブラックの頂上まで登ると、後は２キロ近い中級斜面を一気に滑り降りる。夏はトレッキングでにぎわう
　町は首都の風格を感じさせる。中心に近いあたりには、緑の公園にロシア正教の教会がある。カラフルに塗られたファサードに丸く大きなドーム、金色に光る尖塔が印象的だ。ショッピングセンターの脇の通りは絵描きたちが絵画を展示販売している。町には白系のロシア人と日本人とよく似たカザフ人が相半ばする。
　アルマティは心安らぐ都市だ。ホテルの窓を開けると雪をいただくアラタウ山脈の頂きが見えるからだろうか。山間で生まれた私には、山の見える暮らしはホッとする。

    Almaty, or during the Soviet days known as Alma-Ata,  is a former oasis city.  While Kazakhstan is generally dry with a florid winter, the weather in Almaty located in the southern tip of the nation is warm and mild.  Almaty is on the foot of the Alatau mountain range, which forms a branch of the Ten Shan mountain range.  There are peaks more than 4000 meters high in the Alatau mountain range.  This had been the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan till the capital was moved to Astana in 1997.  
    Driving out of Almaty towards the mountains, you reach Medeo in about 30 minutes, where one of the world's fastest skating link is seen.  Driving 30 minutes more will take you to Chimbulak.  This place becomes a ski resort in the winter.  Three consecutive lifts will take you to the peak, from where you could ski all the way through a 2-km long steep downhill  course.  The place is popular for treckers in the summer.
    The city has a touch of tradition as the capital city.  In the city center is the Russian Orthodox Church.  This church has a colorful facade, large domes and golden spears on top.  Near the Shopping Center is a crowded street where artists sell their works outdoors.  The city dwellers are half Russian and half Kazakh.  
    Almaty is a relaxing city.  It is partly because you could see the mountain  ranges from the hotels windows.  I was born in mountainous village, and I like seeing mountains.
