沖縄はいまでこそ日本の一部であるが、古くから琉球王国として独立した国を形成していた。1５世紀には3つの王朝が覇権を争いの末に統一王朝が開かれるが、その時代から明に進貢し、明からも冊封使と呼ばれる外交団が度々来訪している。それは琉球が大和朝廷と並ぶ独立国家として認められていたことを示すものだ。琉球の文化には中国や、あるいは一部には韓国の影響も見られるという。
　その琉球王国の城都が置かれたのが首里（しゅり）である。那覇市の中心部から東へ3キロほどの丘陵地である。丘の頂上に首里城が置かれ、低地には城下町が栄えた。首里から沖縄本島の各地につながる道が整備され、城址から城下の金城に降りるあたりには当時の石畳が残っている。琉球石灰岩とよばれる柔らかく水を含みやすい岩で作られている首里の丘は地下水が豊富で、首里城の一角には瑞泉と呼ばれる名水が湧く。首里が泡盛の産地の一つであることは、美味しい地下水と無関係ではない。
　首里城を含む、『琉球王国のグスク及び関連遺産郡』は2000年、世界遺産の登録された。東アジアとの交易によって栄えた琉球王国の城都・首里を歩いてみた。

    Although Okinawa is at present an island that belongs to Japan, it has a history of an independent kingdom for long.  In the 15th Century, an integrated regime was formed after a long standing conflict between three regional governors on this island.  The Ryukyu kingdom sent diplomatic missions to China with gifts, and received return missions regularly.  This indicates that the kingdom was recognized as a independent nation.　　This is why Asian effects are felt extensively in the Okinawa culture.
    The capital of the kingdom was set in the hill called Shuri, about 3 km of Naha city today.  On the hilltop was the castle of Shuri, and a town grew around it.  From the castle in Shuri to locations in Okinawa Island numerous roads were built, one of which is seen today in good shape in Kinjo in the vicinity of Shuri.  The hill of Shuri has a base composed of Ryukyu limestone, which is soft and permeable, and is thus gifted with groundwater.  There is a spring called Zuisen in the hill of Shuri.  Shuri town is know for good produce of Awamori - a locally distilled spirit.  
    The castles of Ryukyu Kingdom and related facilities in Okinawa was registered in the UNESCO World Heritage in 2000.  I took a walk in Shuri - the castle of the Ryukyu kingdom that prospered through trades with East Asia.
