数年前から、オランダ東インド会社に興味があります。江戸開府と同じころの1602年、アジアとの貿易を目的に連合東インド会社（VOC)が設立されています。本社の所在地アムステルダムや植民地経営のシンクタンクともいうべきデルフトを訪れる機会がありました。そんな折も折、台湾の古都・台南に行くことになりました。
　台南と聞いても初めはピンとこなかったのですが、調べてみて驚いたのは、この台南こそがオランダ東インド会社の中国進出を狙うアジアの拠点の一つだったのです。VOCのアジアの最大の拠点がバタビア（今のジャカルタ）におかれ、さらに平戸（後に長崎に移される）から日本進出を、台南から中国進出を窺がったのです。台湾海峡を望む台南の海沿いにはゼーランジャー城（1622年）が、陸側には行政府となるプロヴィンシャー城が築かれました。台南にはオランダが建設したこの二つの城が残っています。
　オランダの足跡に加えて、古い寺院や仏閣が目を楽しませてくれます。またお菓子や料理にも台南が発祥の地というものが少なくありません。台南は台湾にとって古都、いわば日本の京都のような都市です。台南の「今」をお楽しみください。

    Since a few years ago, I have been interested in the Dutch East India Company.  In 1602, the integrated east India company (VOC) was established in the Netherlands.  I visited Amsterdam, where the headquarters of VOC was located, and Delft, which served as a think tank for colonial land operation.  On one occasion, by chance, I was going to Tainan, the old city in Taiwan.
    I didn't quite realize it until I went through guide books - that Tainan was the strategic place for VOC in pursuit of trade with China.  The main base of VOC was set in Batavia (Jakarta), and Hirado (later moved to Nagasaki)  served as the gateway to Japan, and Tainan the gateway to China.  VOC built the Fort of Zeelandia in 1622 at a location facing the Taiwan Strait in Tainan, and an administrative center called the Fort of Provincia a few kilometers inland.  These two forts are still in existence in good shape.
    Besides the ruins of the Dutch presence, Tainan is full of old temples and shrines.  Tainan is an old capital city of Taiwan, just like what Kyoto is to Japan.
