10年ほど前、スリランカの首都・コロンボにしばらく滞在した。
　スリランカはインド洋に浮かぶ雫のような形をした熱帯の島。昔はセイロンと呼ばれたが、今は紅茶のブランドにその名を残す。南西からの湿ったモンスーンが吹く5月から9月ころは雨期となり、島には恵みに雨が地面をぬらす。春のような暖かさの中で、樹木が蒼い葉を広げる。スリランカの島を厚く緑が覆う。
　日本とスリランカという二つの島国はずっと良好な関係を維持している。そのきっかけとなったのが、1950年のサンフランシスコの講和会議だ。第２次世界大戦後の終戦処理をめぐり列国が開催したこの会議で、日本は窮地に追い込まれた。その席ででスリランカの国連代表は、日本の未来に期待をしつつ分割統治に反対する演説を行い、各国に訴えてくれた。
　 スリランカには仏教徒が多い。スリランカ人は東南アジア諸国に比べると彫が深く精悍な顔つきをしているが、町を歩くと道行く人々は、実に屈託のない笑顔を見せてくれる。満月の日には寺院に人々が集まり、花を供え仏に祈る。この日だけはアルコール禁止の「ドライ・デイ」だ。
　「癒しの国」という表現もあるくらい、この国には優しさと豊かさがあふれている。

    I stayed in Colombo, the Capital city of Sri Lanka, about ten years ago.
    Sri Lanka is a tear drop shaped tropical island in the Indian Ocean.  It used to be called Ceylon, which is still used for the brand name of the tea it produces.  With the moist southeastern monsoon comes a rainy season between May and September, when the earth is watered by rainfall.  Warm and wet, trees grow and trunks set out with green leaves shadowing the earth.  Sri Lanka is now covered with thick greenery all around.
    The two islands, Sri Lank and Japan, have long maintained good relations, partly because of an early post-war event.  In 1950 in San Francisco, the Sri Lanka's UN delegation delivered a speech in which Sri Lanka expressed a hope for the new generation of Japan and stood against division of Japan by the Allied Nations.  This relieved Japan from the difficult confrontation in the talks.
    Many of Sri Lankans are buddhists.  The people in Sri Lank have sharply chiseled features.  Walking in the street, though, people are very friendly and have care free smiles.  On the evening of the full moon, people gather at temples with flowers, and prey to Buddha.  This day is exceptionally a "dry day" and no alcohol is allowed.  
    Sometimes called a healing island, Sri Lanka is full of gracefulness and affluence.
