カンボジアにはアンコール・ワットの遺跡群というユネスコの世界遺産があり、それに加えて昨 年、タイとの 国境にあるプレア・ビヘール（Preah Vihear）という、やはりアンコール時代の遺跡が世界遺産に登録された。この国境の遺跡は、世界遺産登録後、タイとカンボジアのあいだで国境紛争が蒸し返され、一時期は発砲沙汰にまでなっ たのだが、最近やっと国境は落ち着いたようだ。そして、いつになるかはわかないけれど、次の世界遺産の候補としていくつかの遺跡の名前が挙がっている。そ の中で、もっとも世界遺産指定に近いといわれているのがサンボー・プレイクックだ。サン ボー・プレイクック1998年から早稲田大学のチームが発掘・修復に関わっている。そのため、遺跡に関するデータが蓄積されているのが、世界遺産最短とい わ れるゆえんの一つだ。
サンボー・プレイクックというのは、アンコールワットのあるシムリアップと、カンボジアの首都プノン ペンを結ぶ国道6号線の途中にある州都、コンポン・トムの郊外にある。コンポン・トムはシムリアップから車でいけば2時間ほど、プノンペンからだと4時間 ほどの場所にあり、サンボー・プレイクックはそこからさらに30キロほど、トクトクで小1時間ほどかかるから、プノンペンから5時間ほど見ておく必要があ る。朝早くに出れば、日帰りも不可能ではない。
まだ、あまり有名な遺跡ではないけれど、世界遺産の指定されるとどっと人が行くと思うので、その前にひっそりと、ゆっくりと訪問しておこう。この遺跡は ほんとうに魅力的だ。
Cambodia already has the UNESCO World Heritage site in Angkor and the ruins, and in addition, last year the Angkorian ruin of Preah Vihear was added as a new World Heritage site. But this designation brought anew the long settled border dispute, which resulted in some gun fire. There are a few candidates for new designation for future UNESCO World Heritage, but probably the most promising may be Sambor Prey Kuk. Waseda University of Japan has been carrying out the restoration since 1998, and the data have been accumulated for Sambor Prey Kuk.
Sambor Prey Kuk is located near the Provincial city of Kompong Thom, located between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Sambor Prey Kuk is about 30 km from Konpong Thom city. From Phnom Penh, it take about 5 hours. If you start early in the morning, a day trip could be made.
Right now Sambor Prey Kuk may not be so famous, but if it gets designation, a number of people may go there. So before this happens, I visited there quietly. The ruins are so fascinating.
