Kamikochi is located in the central part of Japan, in Nagano Prefecture.  This is a gateway to the Japan Alps, as well as a summer resort.  Kamikochi became famous when an English missionary priest Weston climbed Mt. Yarigatake, and published a story about it in Meiji Era.  Later the area was designated as a National Park in 1934, and  a regular bus service to the Kappa bridge was started.  After the WWII, the area became popular for holiday makers, and family cars started to flood the narrow gorge.  In 1975, the regulation of family cars has been introduced.  Today, one has to part his/her car in a huge parking lot at the foot of the area, and change to a bus to enter the national park area.
There is a small marshy lake called Taisho Ike (lake) near the downstream end of Kamikochi, where you may get off from the bus.  Strolling on a riverside lane upstream, and you may enjoy about a hour's walk.  There you see the Azusa River, small brooks running to join, or some small marshes here and there.  Near the upstream end is Kappa Bashi (bridge), which is an old fashioned wooden bridge with wire suspension alongside.
Kamikochi is one of the most popular natural park in japan.  There is a plan to excavate a new tunnel there for railway, too.
