アレクサンドリアは、エジプトの首都カイロから北に2時間あまり、地中海に面したエジプト第2の町だ。カイロから日帰り圏だから、何度か遊び に行った。
　もともとアレクサンドリアは、マケドニア国アレクサンドロス王（アレクサンダー大王）が東方遠征をした際、エジプトに立ち寄って、すでに力が弱まってい た古代エジプト王国を征服して自らの領土にしたことに始まる。アレクサンドロス王は地中海交易のための港を求め、このアレクサンドリアに都市と港湾を築く ことを決意したのだった。アレクサンドロスは、ロードス島の建築家・ディノクラティスに都市計画を命じ、BC331年に着工された。アレクサンドロスはこ の8年後、BC323年に戦地で没するから、アレクサンドロスはこの自分の名前を冠した都市の完成した姿を見ていないことになる。大王の没後、アレクサン ドロスが制圧した広大な土地は領主を失い、ばらばらになってしまうのだが、エジプトはアレクサンドロス配下のプトレマイオスが引き継いで王になった。古代 エジプト最後のギリシャ人王朝（プトレマイオス朝）はこうして生まれた。
　アレクサンドリアといえば、もひとり忘れてはならないのがクレオパトラだろう。アレクサンドロス王から200年以上後の人だから、二人は当然会ってもい ない。しかし、クレオパトラはこの建国の父のようなアレクサンドロス王を慕い、その墓のそばに自分も埋めてほしいと願ったといわれる。ちなみに二人の墓は いずれも、まだ発見されていない。
　

    Alexandria is a Mediterranean city about 2 hours car ride from Cairo, the capital city of Egypt.  As a destination for a day trip, I visited Alexandria a few times. 
    I came to learn that Alexandria is named after the Alexander the Great, the king of Macedonia, who made excursion and conquered the eastern region.  In the early part of the excursion, he got Egypt under his control.  He decided that he needed a city and a port, and selected the site of Alexandria.  He ordered Dinocratis, the Architect from the Rhodos, to do the city planning, and in BC.331 the construction was started.  The king passed away in BC. 323 without seeing the completed Alexandria.  After the death of the king, the conquered lands lost the controller and divided for regional rule.  Egypt was taken by one of the subordinates of the King named Ptolemy, who set up the Greek kingdom in Egypt.
    Another name often associated with Alexandria is Cleopatra.  She live more than 200 years after the death of the king, so the two had never met. But Cleopatra longed to be buried near the King's grave.  Actually, the graves of them have not been found yet.
