カイロといえばピラミッドなのだが、生きている町に興味のある私として は、どうも今ひとつ行きたいという気にならない。それで気がついたのは、ピラミッド見るのじゃなくて、ピラミッドで暮らしている人々を見に行けばいいじゃ ん、ということ。それで何度か足を運びました。人が住んでいるのは、 スフィンクスの近く。ラクダやロバ、馬などの商売道具たちが一杯居ました。ピラミッドの近くでは観光客相手にぼったくりの商売している彼らですが、根は優 しい。集落では意地悪もされず、商売の相手とも見られず、邪魔もされずに楽しくお散歩しました。

　
   Cairo is famous for the Pyramids.  I am more interested in the cities which are alive, the pyramids did not attract me much.  I realized however that there are people living around the pyramids in squatter settlements.  So I set out for a walk sometimes.  The settlement is around Sphinx, and there are a number of camel, donkeys and horses.  These guys are very mean to tourists at the pyramids, but in the settlement  they are ordinary people.  Nobody ripped me, nor chased me to sell services, and I enjoyed walking in the village.
