カイロの歴史的な町・イスラム地区に隣接して、死者の町という怖い名前の場所がある。別にゾンビが出るわけじゃあない。ここはイ スラム地区が発展する中で、14世紀くらいからずっと墓地にされていた場所なのだ。死者の町は広大な面積を占めており、その中には数万人の人が住むという。もちろん生きている人 のことだ。
　死者の町には、いくつかの代表的な廟、つまり墓を兼ねた建物がある。なかでも カーイトゥベーイの墓とマスギドと呼ばれる建物が有名だ。これはエジプトの１ポンド札の絵柄になっているくらいだから、日本でいえば平等院鳳凰堂というと ころか。その割に観光客が少ないのは、やはり死者の町という名前がいけないのかな。死者の町の建物は、ドームが釣鐘のような形をしていて、表面には細かい浮き彫りの装 飾がなされている。
　死者の町を歩いてみると、そこに住む生者たちはみな素朴で明るく優しい。ピラミッドでエジプト人が嫌いになりそうな人は、死者の町でリハビリしてみたらどうか な。
　
    Next to the historic quarters called the Islamic Cairo, there is so-called the city of the dead.  This is an area which have housed graves since the 14th century or so.  The area is vast, and there are more than 10,000 people who live there.
    There are a few famous mausoleums there, such as the one for Qaytbay, who is also famous for the fort in Alexandria. The mausoleum is featured on the Egyptian One Pound Bill.  The domes of mausoleums are beautifully decorated with carving. 
    The people in the city of the dead are gentle and nice.  If you have bad feelings for the Egyptians say in the Pyramid area, you may consider doing some rehabilitation here.
