ベトナムには10年以上前に何度か滞在したことがあるのだが、最近は２ 年ほど前に数日行ったきりであまり縁がなかった。先月、そのベトナムに 2年ぶりに行った。
　ぼくのベトナムの印象というのは、一口でいうとせせこましいというか、悪くい えばずるがしこい。タクシーでもよく小銭がないからといってつり銭をくれな かったり、お店では外国人と見ると値段をふっかけてきたり。道端で両替してもらったときは、１０枚あるはずの札が９枚しかない（勝手に手数料を１枚分ぬか れた）とか。今になって考えれば、当時、開放ムードに沸いていたベトナムで人々は、少々せせこましくも必死になって上昇気流を捕らえようとしていたのかも しれない。
　しかし、今回ベトナムに行ってみると、ベトナムは鷹揚に構えていた。昔のよう なせせこましさは感じられず、むしろ若いエネルギーがむんむんとするような 感じを受けた。実際に若い人が多い（特に高齢化している日本に比べると）ということもあるが、若者が元気一杯なのだ。町は二輪車にまたがった少年少女が行 き来しているし、歩道にひろげた露天の屋台では若者がスイーツを食べている。それで、今回は若いエネルギーに満ちた町を取ってみようと思って町を歩いてみ た。うまく撮れたかどうか。

    I have stayed in Vietnam several times 10 years ago or more.  Recently, I made a short visit to Vietnam 2 years ago, and besides that I stayed away from Vietnam most of the time.  Then again, I had a chance to go there last March.
    My old impression of Vietnam is rather bad - mean and wise, because they treated me so.  In a taxi the driver always said he didn't have change.  At the shop the keep would ask for a foreigner price.  When I changed money in the street, I found later that there only 9 bills rather than 10.  Maybe they were, as I think today, trying to catch the bus that was about to get off.
    This time Vietnam showed me a different face with more maturity and faith.  Rather I was taken aback with the full blast energy they have got.  There are many young people (particularly, if compared with Japan), and they are naturally full powered.  The streets are full of youngster riding on bicycles  and the pavement cafes are crowded with the teens picking on sweets.  I set out in the city of Hanoi with a camera.
