ムンバイはインド屈指の経済都市という。ものを売ったり買ったりするのは、経済の基本だ。というわけで
（ちょっと強引だけれど）、今日はムンバイの市場を特集します。もの食う人々、という本があったけれど、それに引っ掛けて「もの売る人々」、というわけで
す。
ムンバイのマーケットはいくつかあるが、ぼくがよく出かけたのは、半島の突端に近いコラバという地区のマーケット。ここは漁村に隣接しているから、魚も
多い。それから有名なのがクロフォード・マーケット。ここには市場の建物とは思えないほど立派な、古い石造の建物があるのだ。世界遺産のヴィクトリア・
ターミナスという駅と同系統のものだ。
もの売る人がいれば、ものを買う人もいる。そして、売られたものが料理されて人々の胃袋に納まり、飢えをしのぎ、あるいは栄養となって体を作りっていくこ
とを考えると、市場は人間の暮らしに大事なものだ。
Mumbai is said to be the economic center of
India. The economy starts from selling and buying things.
Thus this installment deals with the people selling things.
There are a few markets in Mumbai. One I
frequented was Colaba Market neat the tip of the peninsula of
Mumbai. As this market is near a fishing village there, there are
various fish sold here as well as vegetables and fruits. Another
market, probably better known to people, would be Crawford
Market. In the premise of this market, there is an old stone
building similar to those at the Victoria Terminus, which is on
the World Heritage list.
Where there are people selling things, there are
people buying things. Knowing that the things sold to people will
be cocked and consumed, easing the hunger and building the bodies of
people, markets are seen as essential in human lives.
