エジプトはナイルの賜物である――そういったのはギリシャの 歴史家・旅行家のヘロドトスだ。彼はエジプトや中近東の国々を旅して歩き、旅行記を書いた。エジプト領内も今の地名でいうギザのピラミッドやファユーム、 ルクソールなどを旅している。その旅での見聞を書いたのが、『歴史』という本だ。だから、この本には、今では失われたものも含めて、ギリシャ人の目に映っ た当時のエジプトの様子が活写されている。
　エジプトを空からみると、と今ではＧｏｏｇｌｅ　Ｅａｒｔｈがあるから簡単に書けるが、エジプトは砂漠を示す薄茶色で覆われている。その例外が一本の 筋、つまりナイル川に沿った帯と、それが分岐する箒の先のようなデルタ地帯だ。この箒の柄と先がエジプトにおける可住地のほぼすべてだ。あとはいくばくか のオアシスがあるに過ぎない。だから、エジプトはナイルなしには生きていけない。ほとんどの都市はこの「箒」の緑色の中に含まれる。ヘロドトスの言うよう に、エジプトはナイルの賜物なのだ。
　カイロにいるとあちこちでナイル川と遭遇する。ある時は岸辺から、ある時は橋から、ある時は河岸のホテルのルーフから、ある時は水上バスから、ナイルを 眺めてみた。砂漠の中を滔々と流れるナイル川、やっぱり不思議だ。

   The Egypt is the gift of the Nile, so said a Greek Historian Herodotos.  He traveled in Egypt and wrote what he saw, heard and thought in  a book called The History.  Thus this book describes what there in his time in Egypt, and how it looked to a Greek traveler.
    If you look at Egypt from the above -- I can write it so easily thanks to Google Earth these days -- you may see vast expanse of light brownish color The exception is the narrow belt along the Nile and what looks like the the bloom sticking out from the handle, which is in reality the Nile Delta.  Most of the livable area is within this bloom like thing.  Indeed Egypt is the gift of the Nile.
    I took walks around the Nile when I am in Cairo, and always I come across the Nile.  That is to say, on the bank, from the bridge, from the rooftop of a hotel along the river or from the Nile cruise boat. The water going through the vast, dry desert is a wonder.
