ムンバイというと、インドの金融中心というイメージがある。それはそれで正しいのだけれど、もうひとつのムン バイの顔がアートの町だ。特にポップアートで有名らしい。ある日曜日、アートを求めて町を歩いてみた。まず目指したのは、旧市街の真ん中あたりにある、プ リンスオブウェールズ博物館。いえ、博物館を見るのが目的ではなくて、この博物館の前の道には、さまざまな芸術家さんたちが作品を展示したり売ったりす る、「美術館通り」を歩くのが目的。この一帯には、小さい美術館や画廊がいくつかあり、アートな町並みなのだ。道で油絵を売る人、神々しい宗教がを売る仙 人のよ うな人、道でポートレートを描く老人などなど。アートな町歩きは楽しい。

    Mumbai is known as the financial center of India.  Indeed that may be true.  But another face of Mumbai is the city of modern art.  Mumbai is famous for art, particularly the modern art, so they say.  On one sunday, I set out for a walk in the artistic quarter.  The starting point is the Prince of Wales Museum.  The area around this museum is full of small galleries, and even on the street there are artists selling their work.  I decided to call the the Art Street to myself.  There are people selling oil paintings, religious pictures or drawing portraits.  Walking in the Art Street is a lot of fun.
